  1. stress Change How Your Brain Responds to Stress Change Your Life

  2. Anybody Here Under Stress? What’s Your Remedy for Stress?

  3. How Do You Treat Stress? What strategies or techniques do you use to release stress?

  4. Stress…So What? Why Care?

  5. Consequences of Stress • PHYSICAL • Ulcers • Hardening of Arteries • Heart Attacks • Type II Diabetes • Frequent Colds • Erectile Dysfunction • EMOTIONAL • Anxiety • Depression • Poor Concentration • Loss of Enjoyment • Reduces Serotonin • Poor Concentration • Agitation

  6. We’ve Learned From Science • You have developed automatic responses to stress • Some serve you and some harm you • You can train your brain to have a new response • You can choose to respond…..or not

  7. We Are Hard-Wired • Fundamental survival-fight or flight response • Your brain tries to interpret incoming info • Experiences release chemicals in the brain • Stressful experiences release cortisol and adrenaline • Positive experiences release dopamine and serotonin • Brain keeps playing reruns to prepare you for the next time this happens

  8. Stanford Study of Tibetan Monks Meditating monks were exposed to the sound of gunfire while meditating Their brains exhibited little or no response to the startling noise This was a result of the practice of “noticing” but not reacting to thoughts

  9. How We’re Built Your body is built from the foods you eat Your brain is built from your experiences and the flow of experiences gradually shapes your brain

  10. Unconscious Choices Your brain creates your “interior landscape” … what it feels like to “be you”. This is an unconscious process that sorts your experiences into 2 groups: Those that benefit you Those that cause harm

  11. Here’s the Bad News Your brain scans your experiences and preferentially stores the negative experiences This predisposes you to recall the bad rather than the good experiences first, even when the number of positive experiences outweighs the number of negative experiences.

  12. Now Here’s the Good News • Your brain keeps changing and growing • The brain’s ability to learn and change is called “neuroplasticity”- a newer area of science • Because of all the ways your brain changes its structure, your experience matters beyond its momentary, subjective impact • Translation – based on science, this is the fundamental reason for being kind to yourself, cultivating wholesome experiences and taking them in

  13. So, Kerry, let me get this straight….. • You’re telling me that I’m hardwired for bad news and my body suffers from this? • And that I can consciously change my brain’s wiring so that I have a different reaction? • And this will reduce my stress?? YES!

  14. Ready to Rewire Your Brain? • Recall a painful, reoccurring thought • Now, immediately replace it with a warm, fuzzy thought • Repeat • It’s just that simple

  15. Ahhhhhhhhh

  16. Patience – Compassion - Hope Change begins with a small step A new habit takes a while to form Give yourself a chance to see change If you falter, be kind to yourself, and begin again
