SCIELO AS AN OPEN ARCHIVE: the development of SciELO / OpenArchives data provider interface Prof. Carlos H. Marcondes Federal Fluminense University/ Information Science Department, Brazil marcondes@alternex.com.br • Marcondes
SUMMARY • What is SciELO • ISIS database format and Developing Countries Information Systems • Technical overview • Conclusion • Marcondes
What is SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online • Set of tools for developing a web digital library of scientific electronic journals • Several SciELO Web Gateways, holding Brazilian electronic journals and also Latin American and Spain • Provides enhanced services to Scientific Journals from developing countries, concerning • electronic publishing • digital preservation through the use of SGML • access through a web search interface • cross search different electronic journals • SciELO/Open Archives interface: increases visibility of journal articles held in SciELO through an interface compliant with Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting • SciELO uses CDS/ISIS software database format • Marcondes
CDS/ISIS software and Developing Countries Information Systems Computerized Information Service / Integrated Scientific Information System • Textual database management system, planned for bibliographic and documentation systems • Originated in ILO at early 60’s • Maintained by UNESCO since 70’s • 1985: first microcomputer version • 1995: first Windows version • Largely used in developing countries information systems • Marcondes
Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting - OAI-PMH - overviewAn Open Archive is a Web server with facilities for electronic publishing, storage, preservation and access to scientific digital documents. Open Archives Protocol provides interoperability between electronic archives holding digital documents • Two roles: • Data Provider: internet servers with electronic archives holding digital documents and metadata about them. Data Providers expose metadata about their documents • Service providers: use metadata automatically collected from Data Providers to develop value-added information services as: unified access, peer-review, qualified databases, etc. SciELO OAI interface • Marcondes
Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting overview SciELO and Open Archives • How Service Providers and Data Providers interact: • Service Providers: send requests -Verbs - for metadata stored in Data Providers Verbs: Identify List Metadata Formats List Sets List Identifiers Get Record List Records • Data Providers: answer to requests from Service Providers sending metadata about digital documents they hold • Marcondes
Implementation of OAI-PMH in SciELO – an OAI-PMH Data Provider Server • Feasibility study: local computer implementation of two verbs: ListIdentifiers and GetRecord • Pilot-project: • Implementation of all six Verbs • Implementation of OAI-PMH Set feature as each journal collection • implementation of resumption token • PHP language used URL: http://www.scielo.br/oai/scielo-oai.php • Marcondes
Conclusions: • Generalization of SciELO/OAI solution to metadata databases in ISIS format • Availability of free STM information: opportunity to developing countries • Need of technological tools for developing countries publish and access information of their own interest • Marcondes
