INVESTIGATE THE TRUTH CONCERNING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FAITH AND WORKS THE WORD AND THE SWORD WHKY “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” James 2:20 The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.
FALSE CONCEPT OF ``FAITH AND WORKS.'' PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • Salvation by ``faith only,'' excluding all works. • This false concept led Martin Luther to reject the inspiration of the Epistle of James. • Many deceived religionists today hold this false doctrine. • An alleged contradiction between Paul (Rom. 4:1-6) and James 2:14-26. • No contradiction between Paul and James; we are justified (saved) by: • Faith (not faith ``only'') (Rom. 3:28; 5:1; Eph. 2:8-9). • Works (not works ``only'') (James 2:21, 24).
FALSE CONCEPT OF ``FAITH AND WORKS.'' The Word and The Sword • Paul and James discussed two different kinds of works: • Paul spoke of works which are EXCLUDED from God's plan to save: • Rom. 4:1-6; Eph. 2:8-9 • Meritorious works of human achievement that one may boast of and glory in, designed to earn salvation. • James spoke of works which areINCLUDED in God's plan to save: • James 2:14-16 • Works of righteousness, obedience to the commands of God (Acts 10:34-35; Psalm 119:172; John 6:28-29). • James 2:14-26 forcefully defeats the false doctrine of ``FAITH ONLY.'‘ • TO ESTABLISH THIS POINT WE WILL NOW FOCUS ON HEBREWS 11
HEBREWS 11:1 – “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. 1st & 3rd Tuesdays 8-10pm • A CHRISTIANS FAITH ACCEPTS THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNT OF CREATION: • Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Vrs 3 • Much Debate Is DONE ON THIS SUBJECT…. • WHICH IS IT …. GOD’S WORD or CHARLES DAWINS ORIGIN OF SPECIES? • GOD SPOKE THE WORLD INTO EXISTENCE AND THAT’S IT! • LET US NOTE THREE SIMPLE POINTS IN HEBREWS 11 • GOD ALWAYS SAID {COMMANDED} SOMETHING. • MAN HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD WHAT GOD HAD SAID, THEN MEN OF FAITH DONE WHAT GOD COMMANDED. • THEIR FAITH + THEIR WORKS = PLEASING GOD
HEBREWS 11:4 --- “ABEL and his SACRIFICE TO GOD” PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • “BY FAITH” • “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Rom. 10:17 • APPLICATION: • GOD SAID/COMMANDED SOMETHING --- {NECESSARY INFERENCE} • ABEL OBEYED WHAT GOD HAD COMMANDED: • “offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain” vrs 4 • ABELS FAITH + ABELS SACRIFICE = HIS WITNESS THAT HE WAS RIGHTEOUS --- vrs 4 • QUESTIONS? • WAS THIS MERITORIOUS WORKS? • WAS HIS SCARIFICE BY FAITH ONLY?
HEBREWS 11:7 --- “NOAH and the ARK” WHKY Channel 14 • “BY FAITH” • “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Rom. 10:17 • APPLICATION: • GOD SAID/COMMANDED SOMETHING --- Genesis 6:14-21 • NOAH OBEYED WHAT GOD HAD COMMANDED: Genesis 6:22 • NOT JUST SOME OF THE COMMANDS BUT “ALL”. • NOAHS FAITH + NOAHS OBEDIENCE = BECAME AN HEIR OF THE RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH IS BY FAITH. • QUESTION? • WAS THIS MERITORIOUS WORKS? • WAS THIS BY FAITH ONLY?
HEBREWS 11:8-16 --- “ABRAM and SARAH” PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • “BY FAITH” • “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Rom. 10:17 • APPLICATION: • GOD SAID/COMMANDED SOMETHING --- Genesis 12:1 • ABRAM OBEYED WHAT GOD HAD COMMANDED: Genesis 12:4-15:21 • NOT JUST HAPPY TO MOVE DOWN THE ROAD --- HE LEFT AND WANDERED. • ABRAMS FAITH + ABRAMS OBEDIENCE = Heb 11:13 • “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth” • QUESTION? • WAS THIS MERITORIOUS WORKS? • WAS THIS BY FAITH ONLY?
HEBREWS 11:17-19 --- “ABRAHAM and ISAAC” The Word and The Sword • “BY FAITH” • “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Rom. 10:17 • APPLICATION: • GOD SAID/COMMANDED SOMETHING --- Genesis 22:1-2 • ABRAM OBEYED WHAT GOD HAD COMMANDED: Genesis 22:3-12 • HIDDEN JEWELS FOUND HERE --- “I AND THE LAD WILL GO UP YONDER AND WE WILL COME BACK…” • ABRAMS FAITH + ABRAMS OBEDIENCE = Genesis 22:15-18 • QUESTION? • WAS THIS MERITORIOUS WORKS? • WAS THIS BY FAITH ONLY?
JAMES SAYS --- 2:21-24 PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • “Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? • Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? • And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. • Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. • GOD SAID {COMMANDED} SOMETHING • ABRAHAM HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD WHAT GOD SAID {FAITH} • ABRAHAM DID WHAT GOD HAD COMMANDED HIM {WORKS} • ABRAHAM’S FAITH + HIS WORKS = WHY HE WAS CALLED A FRIEND OF GOD.
THE TRUTH ABOUT ``FAITH AND WORKS'' (Analysis of James 2:14-26). The Word and The Sword • Faith without works is ``dead'' (vs.14-17). • Verse 14 --- Two questions raised: • Of what profit (advantage, blessing) is there to a man who says he has faith and has no works? • Can faith (``that'' faith) save him? • Verses 15-16 --- James demonstrates the principle that faith apart from works of obedience is profitless, vain, dead! • Verse 17 --- The application of verses 15 & 16: • Returns to the thought of verse 14 --- ``What doth it profit...?'‘ • `Even so'' --- just as one who is in need and hungry cannot profit from kind words and well wishes, neither is there any blessing in faith which does not prompt to faithful obedience to the Lord's commands. • A ``dead faith'' (void of works) will not save! • A ``saving faith'' is faith made alive by works of obedience to God's commands.
THE TRUTH ABOUT ``FAITH AND WORKS'' (Analysis of James 2:14-26). PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • Works --- the ``PROOF'' of our faith (vs.18-20). • Verse 18 --- The only way we can prove our faith is through obedience. • Same principle in proving our LOVE (John 14:15; 1 John 3:18; 5:3). • Faith cannot be seen except through works. • When one will not submit to the commands of God's word; it is proof not only that he does not love God, but that he has no true faith in God. • Verse 19 ---- The doctrine of ``FAITH ONLY'' is put to the test. • According to this doctrine, the devils are justified. • To acknowledge God is good, but not sufficient to save (John 12:48; Heb. 11:6). • Verse 20 --- Concludes that ``faith without works is dead'' (cf. v.17).
IN CONCLUSION --- THE CHRISTIAN WHOSE FAITH IS ``DEAD:'' November 18th 2003 • The one who does not adhere to SOUND DOCTRINE • Titus 2:1; 2 John 9-11; Gal. 1:6-12; Matt. 15:9. • The one who is not living a PURE AND GODLY LIFE • Titus 2:11-12; Rom. 8:1-6; Eph. 5:26-27; • Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Tim. 5:22; 1 John 2:15-17; • James 4:4.
IN CONCLUSION --- THE CHRISTIAN WHOSE FAITH IS ``DEAD:'' PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • The one who is not GLORIFYING GOD THROUGH ACTIVE AND FAITHFUL SERVICE IN HIS KINGDOM, THE CHURCH (Eph. 3:21; Matt. 5:13-16; Rev. 2:10). • Not growing in Bible knowledge and spiritual strength (1 Peter 2:2; 2 Peter 3:18; 2 Tim. 2:15). • Not seeking FIRST the kingdom and his righteousness (Matt. 6:33; Col. 3:1-3). • Not faithful in attending the assemblies (Heb. 10:25). • Not practicing PURE AND UNDEFILED RELIGION (James 1:27; 2:15-16; Gal. 6:10). • Not supporting the Lord's cause, financially (1 Cor. 16:2). • Not supporting the work and mission of the church (Matt. 28:19-20; 1 Cor. 15:58; Titus 3:1). • The unfaithful Christian who will not REPENT (Acts 8:22), • CONFESS HIS SIN (1 John 1:9) • PRAY TO GOD FOR FORGIVENESS (Acts 8:22; James 5:16).
ARE YOU PLEASING TO GOD? PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • HAS GOD COMMANDED SOMETHING? • HEAR THE WORD? {Work + Faith} • BELIEVE THE WORD? {Work + Faith} • REPENT OF YOUR SINS? {Work + Faith} • CONFESS THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST? {Work + Faith} • BE BURIED IN THE WATERS OF BAPTISM? {Work + Faith} • PLEASING GOD BRINGS IT’S REWARD • SALVATION FROM PAST SINS • SALVATION FROM SINS THAT ARE COMMITED, REPENTED OF AND CONFESSED • ETERNAL SALVATION BY FAITHFULLY {FAITH} WALKING {Works} WORTHY OF OUR CALLING • FAITH + WORKS = BEING ALIVE
FINAL THOUGHTS!!! PREACHING THE TRUTH IN LOVE • Only an active, obedient faith (a faith made perfect by works) will save (Luke 6:46; Matt. 7:21-23). • The Alien sinner must: Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess Faith in Christ, be Baptized for the remission of sins. • The Christian must continue to exercise an obedient faith. • If you're one who believes, teaches, or practices ``FAITH ONLY;'' the Holy Spirit, through James, has a question for you, • ``BUT WILT THOU KNOW, O VAIN MAN, THAT FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD?'‘ vrs 20 • “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” vrs 26
