Description of 1-BP • Clear, colorless liquid • Sweet odor • Used as a solvent for degreasing and as an adhesive • Flammable (Category 2) • Unregulated chemical
Exposure • Inhalation • Breathe in vapor or drops of spray • Skin contact
Health Affects • Damages nerves in the arms, legs and body • Irritating to eyes, nose, throat and lungs • Causes dermatitis • High exposures may harm the liver • Being tested to see if it can cause cancer
Signs and Symptoms • Numbness in legs or arms • Dizziness, headaches and lightheadedness • Weakness or numbness in hands and feet; pins and needles • Dry, rough, red, cracked skin
Exposure Limits (Air Levels Only) • Currently an unregulated chemical by OSHA • Recommended exposure levels • American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) recommends over an 8-hour workshift: • 10 parts per million (PPM) Threshold limit value (TLV) • 50 mg/m3 time-weighted average (TWA) • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends an 8-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 25 PPM
Work Practice Control Measures • No eating, smoking or drinking in regulated areas • Always wash at end of shift and before eating, drinking or smoking • Contaminated clothing cleaned and/or disposed of properly • Removal of contaminated clothing immediately
Work Practice Control Measures • Do not take contaminated clothing home • Wash or shower immediately if skin comes in contact with 1-BP • Ensure proper fit of assigned respirator • Read safety data sheets and labels • Routine exposure monitoring
Work Practice Control Measures • Adequate local exhaust ventilation • Preventive maintenance, replace filters routinely • Label containers • Exposure monitoring • Use personal protective equipment • Regulate and post work areas (only authorized personnel allowed)
Handling and Storage • Not compatible with oxidizing agents and strong bases • Keep stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area • Metal containers containing 1-BP should be grounded and bonded
Handling and Storage • Use only non-sparking tools and equipment when opening and closing containers • Grounding and bonding may not be sufficient to remove static electricity • Sources of ignition, such as smoking and open flames are prohibited in areas where 1-BP is used, handled or stored
Handling and Storage • Avoid contact with skin and eyes • Avoid inhalation of vapor or mist • Use appropriate PPE
Personal Protective Equipment • Gloves that can’t be permeated or degraded by 1-BP • Indirect vent, impact and splash resistant goggles or face shields • Chemical protective, flame retardant antistatic clothing (such as aprons, sleeves, lab coats)
Personal Protective Equipment • Respiratory protection • With organic vapor cartridge • Spraying operations should also include a mist pre-filter cartridge • Dust masks will not provide adequate protection • PPE should be cleaned and inspected daily
First Aid and Decontamination • Leave work area • Remove contaminated clothing • Flush exposed body part with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes • Use soap and water if body part is not the eyes • Clean and/or dispose of contaminated clothing/equipment properly
Spills and Emergencies • If 1-BP has been spilled or has leaked: • Evacuate personnel immediately and control entrance of facility • Call 911 • Eliminate all ignition sources
In Summary • Report signs and symptoms of exposure immediately to your supervisor • Follow all work practices • Wear required PPE
