  2. EGBERT 829 -  839 Egbert was the first King of England. He was forced into exile in France, but returned to England and took control of Wessex and Northumbria. Egbert was born in about 770 and married Redburga. They had three children. Egbert became King of Wessex in 802 and defeated the Mercians in 825. A couple of years later, Northumbria accepted Egbert as the Bretwalda or “Ruler of Britain.” Various conflicting information sources are available on the Internet about Egbert.
