We will Close achievement gap by bringing all significant subgroups to 800 or above; Prepare students so they are proficient across curriculum; Integrate arts into the core curriculum; Provide diverse after-school programming; Provide a safe, welcoming, respectful, and encouraging culture for all stakeholders; Welcome parent/community involvement. Mission Statement The mission of Culver City Middle School, a culturally diverse and collaborative learning community, is to ensure that all students are provided a rigorous education program. We seek to foster a positive work ethic, integrity, respect, and a passion for learning while striving to create a technologically innovative classroom experience.

Culver City Middle SchoolProgram • Each grade level has three teams (language arts, social studies, math, science teachers). • Students are randomly assigned to a team. • Teachers meet weekly to: plan cross-curricular/interdisciplinary units; plan team reward activities and field trips; discuss intervention and/or enrichment activities; meet with parents • Block Scheduling – possibly a new bell schedule next year!

  5. Language ArtsCathi Green-Bratton, Annie Zarrinpar, Dan Grime Provides a balanced, unified program of instruction in language, reading, literature, composition and communication. Engages the students in a variety of essential skills which include listening, speaking, writing and critical thinking. Use language effectively in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Read a variety of literature, including fiction, non-fiction, short stories, plays and poetry. Learn to utilize correct spelling, grammar and vocabulary.

Objective • To expand students knowledge of Ancient Western and Non-Western Civilizations using the California State Content Standards as a guide. • Also offered in Spanish as a continuation of our Spanish Immersion Program and is also available to Native Speakers

  8. Mathematics Concepts and SkillsDonna Bergonzi, Emily Vandever, Kristin Fairfield, Lauren Borcherding Based on the Common Core State Standards, Math 6 offers a balanced curriculum. Fluency of basic skills and the application of those skills are emphasized.

  12. “0” Period PE • Begins every day at 7:30am-8:15am (school day* begins at 8:20am) • Satisfies number of PE minutes required by state • Eligible for ANY student who takes an “academic elective” – Spanish Immersion, Japanese, Immersion, Math Builders, ALD • Allows those students to experience a “traditional” Arts Elective

Physical EducationJason Vermillion, Karen Wyatt • The 6th grade level is designed to provide students with appropriate introductory P.E. skills including: the acquisition of basic skills for court games; running games; rhythmic activities; individual and team sports; and physical conditioning. • Special emphasis is placed on basic ball handling skills along with movement exploration activities, and modified games.

  14. Special Education Special Education offers a full range of services: • Learning Center • Speech and language • Adaptive PE • Specialized Academic Instruction • Services for our severely handicapped population Students with a current IEP will automatically receive appropriate services.

ELD MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Culver City Unified School District is to prepare its English Learners to: • develop a positive self-concept and cross-cultural understanding • meet requirements for redesignation as Fluent English Proficient • graduate from high school ready to pursue careers or further education

CCMS Scholars Program • Classes offered in English Language Arts • Applications will be available in elementary school offices as well as CCMS Website – criteria will be defined in April and included as part of the application • Students will learn of their course placement status at registration in August.

AEIOU Advisory, Enrichment, Intervention, Olweus, Us! • Consists of two-hours per week, within the school day, where students have the opportunity to specialize, lead, and determine their own educational choices. • Programs include: Performances, Publishing, Broadcast News, Video Production, Dance Troupe, Student Court, Debate Club, Recycling & Campus Beautification.

ASBAssociated Student Body • ASB is a school leadership opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students in good academic standing to participate in the following activities: • Represent the interest and goals of the entire CCMS student body. • Being the voice of the students when communicating with the faculty, school district, and community. • Plan, organize, and participate in such activities as formal and informal dances, Spirit Week, grade-level competitions, community and charity awareness projects, cultural events, and other student and school events throughout the year. • ASB is a year-long class that teaches students leadership qualities throughout the year. Students who have interest in applying for ASB must submit an application form, teacher recommendation forms, and must be in good academic standing.

  22. Student Recognition Scholarship League Students who have a 3.0 GPA and no N’s or U’s on any report card receive a certificate and are honored at special events throughout the year. Principal’s Honor Roll Students who have a 3.75 GPA and no N’s or U’s on any report card receive a certificate and are honored at special events throughout the year. Caught You Being Good Students receive tickets for good citizenship/Effort. Weekly drawings are held where students receive prizes such as gift certificates, early to lunch passes, lunch with the principal.

  23. GATE The GATE program at Culver City Middle School provides enrichment and learning opportunities for our GATE students. The program includes: • Differentiated Instruction in CORE classes • An on-campus GATE Advisor • Enrichment activities during AEIOU • Field Trips for 7th and 8th Graders: CIMI and Astrocamp • After School Enrichment Programs such as: Chess & Games Club, LEGO Robotics, Improvisation

  24. The Culver City Police Department provides one uniformed officer for the Culver City Unified School District. Officer Casillas works with our security, the administration, the teachers, the parents and the students to ensure the safety of all of our schools. SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS

Food Services • Food services provides breakfast and lunch for our students daily. • Lunch provides a variety of tasty and healthy treats, including pizza, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and entries provided by our CCUSD food services staff • Students must take three meal components and one of those MUST be ½ cup fruit or vegetable. • e-funds accepts pre-payments on-line for cafeteria account. • Student account activity can be monitored by visiting the Food Service web page at www.culvercafe.org

CULVER CITY MIDDLE SCHOOLParks and RecreationAFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Location: Rm. 401/Library/Blacktop area on CCMS campus Hours: Monday-Friday: School Dismissal - 6:00 p.m. Cost: $52.00 per week Open to all CCMS students Provides: Supervised after school program Complements after school activities offered by CCMS Arts & Crafts, Fun Group Games, Quiet study time in the library

  30. Teen Center LOCATION: VETS Park HOURS: Monday - Friday, 2 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. MEMBERSHIP: $50 per semester. Open to all residents of Culver City and students who attend CCMS on permit.   31. School Site Council/ELAC The School Site Council has developed a site plan to enhance the learning opportunities for the students at CCMS. Categorical funds are specifically earmarked to support the site plan. The council meets on the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. Our English Learner Advisory Committee, comprised of parents, staff, and community members, is specifically designated to advise school officials on English Learner program services. They meet the second Tuesday of every month at 8:45am.

  32. The PTSA is an active group of parents, teachers and students who support Culver City Middle School in many ways. They give freely of their time to support State and National PTA programs. They also help raise money for the CCMS staff and students. Some of their services include: Supplementary funds for all content and elective areas Magazine Drive Book Fair Field Trips/Assemblies Team Activities Staff breakfast/lunches Honorary Service Awards AND...

  33. Student Store Volunteers The Student Store is staffed totally by parent volunteers. The Student Store sells school supplies, PE clothes, and treats. Depending on the availability of parents, the store is open several days a week during lunch and after school. If you have free time, please join us.

  34. PANTHER PARTNERS Panther Partners raises money for after-school programs at CCMS in arts, academics and athletics. We also sponsor campus beautification projects and provide technology upgrades for the teachers and students After School Programs • Arts – Drawing, Art Concept Studio, Design, Comedy Improvisation, Musical Theater, Digital Photo & Photoshop, Cake Decorating, AVPA, Handbells, etc. • Academics – Chess & Games Club, Brain Benders, Mock Trial, Math Counts, Math Olympiads, Lego Robotics, GATE, AVID, etc. • Athletics – Football, Softball, Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Cross Country, Lacrosse, 5K training, Fitness Center, Yoga, Jazz Dance, Zumba, Golf, etc. Technology Upgrades • Teacher laptops, WiFi, iPad carts, LCDs, new computers for testing lab Campus Beautification • Murals, library, meet & greet garden clean up day date, refurbished the back gym flooring, paint and replace ceiling, new bleachers Parent Outreach • Parent Yahoo group – send email to culvercitymiddleschool-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Fundraising • Jog-a-thon in March raises $40,000 • Technology Drive in Fall raises $10,000 • NEW! We are looking for help with after school programs, the Jog-a-thon committee, financial secretary, and Yahoo group administrator.
