  1. Finding business value in open source ALPSP Annual Conference 2019 Andrew Smeall Chief Product Officer andrew.smeall@hindawi.com @mynameissmeall

  2. About Hindawi Limited We publish 200+ open access journals. We provide technology services to societies and publishers. We build open sourcesoftware, primarily using a framework called Pubsweet.

  3. What is Pubsweet? Pubsweet is an open source library of components for building publishing workflows. Pubsweet is building blocks that anyone can fit together to form a publishing platform.

  4. Who is Pubsweet? A community of developers from like-minded organizations. We intend to leave publishing infrastructure in better shape than how we found it. But we also want to achieve the goals of the organizations we represent.

  5. Building a metadata review process for repository ingestion using Pubsweet Building an html-first, collaborative peer review process using Pubsweet Building a traditional, editor-led peer review workflow using Pubsweet

  6. What is “Free” or “Open Source”? “Free speech, not free beer.” -Richard Stallman Not software that doesn’t cost money to run. Software where the underlying code is shared freely using a license that grants certain rights to the user. Source: Richard Stallman, “Why Open Source misses the point of Free Software,” https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point

  7. Is open source “better” software? Not necessarily. Whether something is open doesn’t define how it’s built or what it can do. It does mean you can judge the code quality for yourself.

  8. Is it “better” for researchers? Not really. Most authors and editors don’t care about publishing technology at all. They care about user experience.

  9. Is it “better” for developers?

  10. Is it “better” for technology customers?

  11. But what are they paying for?

  12. Model: Open Core Make some part of your software open to attract base users, but keep other parts closed and charge for those features. COMPANY TECHNOLOGY REVENUE USD $100 Million+ (est.)

  13. Model: Dual License Give away a free version of the software with a “viral” license like GPL, so you can charge companies if they need a more permissive license. COMPANY TECHNOLOGY C, C++, SQL REVENUE USD $70 Million+ (est.)

  14. Model: Software as a Service Charge users who would prefer not to set up and manage the software themselves for a hosted instance. COMPANY TECHNOLOGY REVENUE USD $100 Million+ (est.)

  15. Model: Support Give away the product for free, but charge users a subscription-style fee for support. COMPANY TECHNOLOGY VALUATION USD $3.5 Billion+ (est.)

  16. Model: Advertising and Royalties Charge other companies for access to the users of your free software, for example by showing ads or integrating a third-party product. COMPANY TECHNOLOGY REVENUE USD $21 Million+

  17. Model: Grants and Donations Fund the project through government and private grants, or even individual donations. COMPANY TECHNOLOGY (and others.) REVENUE USD $3 Million+
