What is sexual activity? • Sexual intercourse and other sexual acts, including oral sex and anal sex. • Sexually activity is often simply referred to as sex. • Sexual intercourse is how STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) can be passed.
How to stay abstinent: • Set limits on expressing affection. • Communicate with your partner so they know your limits. • Talk to a trusted adult on ways to manage your feelings and emotions. • Avoid risky situations. • Date people who respect and share your values. • REMEMBER, ABSTINENCE IS THE ONLY 100% EFFECTIVE GUARANTEE AGAINST GETTING PREGNANT OR CONTRACTING AN STD.
How can you avoid risky situations? • Before you go on a date, know where you are going and what you will be doing. • Discuss with your parents what time they expect you home. • Avoid places where alcohol and other drugs are present. • Avoid being alone on a date.
Sex vs. Intimacy • Many people confuse sex and intimacy. However, they are not the same thing. • Intimacy is a strong emotional bond between people. • That bond does not depend on physical contact, but on emotional closeness. • Who can you have an intimate relationship with?
Influences on sexual attitudes: • Who is the biggest influence on sexual attitudes? • Why do you think that is?
Are there lots of high school teens choosing to be sexually active? • No! • They are choosing abstinence. • What is abstinence? • It is the deliberate choice to refrain from engaging in sexual activity.
What are some ways you can say no to “Peer” pressure or pressure from a date?

Consequences of sexual activity: • What is the common emotion associated with teen sex? • Guilt • What are other emotions they may feel? • Anxiety / stress • Worried about pregnancy • Worried about getting an STD • May feel betrayed or used • Depressed • Worried about getting caught
Consequences of sexual activity: • How can teens be socially affected once they become sexually active? • They can begin to act different around parents and their friends. • Friendships may become strained. • Why? • They could also get a criminal record if they are older than 18 and aresexually active with someone younger than 18 (in some states) and 16 (in other states).

Consequences of Teen Pregnancy: • What are some consequences of teen pregnancy? • Teen mother could have complications with pregnancy and child birth. • The teen mother has a high chance of dropping out of high school. • The child could be born prematurely.
Consequences of Teen Pregnancy: 4. The teen parents will have less time for friends and fun activities. 5. Usually decreases the amount of money you will make. 6. Teen parents could end up on welfare.
How many teen moms get a high school diploma? • About 1/3 of the teen mothers get a high school diploma. • Why do so many drop out of school?
Child Support vs. Welfare • What is child support? • Child support is money a parent MUST give to pay for a child’s living and medical expenses. • What is welfare? • It is money or help that is given to low income families, disabled, and senior citizens to help cover medical costs as well as food.
Something to think about: • 30 diapers are about $8.00 a package. A newborn baby goes through up to 12 diapers per day. How much money is spent on diapers for on newborn baby in one week?
