Classical Conditioning • Using a STIMULUS to modify behavior. • PAVLOV is the psychologist associated with Classical Conditioning. • Classical Conditioning and “The Office” • http://www.spike.com/video-clips/0jnov0/the-office-the-jim-trains-dwight
Watson and Little Albert • After Pavlov applied his classical conditioning to animals, Watson applied the technique to changing human behavior with his “Little Albert” experiments. • Brief reading/description: • http://psychology.about.com/od/classicpsychologystudies/a/little-albert-experiment.htm
UCS? CS? UCR? CR? It’s all Greek to me! Before we start the Psychsim activity I want to clarify some basics. I will try to simplify as much as I can.
UCR= Unconditioned Response • It is the NATURAL response. The response is unlearned… we just do it. • Pavlov’s exp: Saliva is UR
UCS= Unconditioned Stimulus • Something that automatically, unconditionally triggers us to do something… any behavior. • Pavlov’s exp: Food is UCS
NS= Neutral Stimulus • Stimulus that means nothing to the person or animal. • Pavlov’s exp: The bell… at first. MEANING
CS= Conditioned Stimulus • Stimulus that once meant nothing, now means something. • Pavlov’s exp: CS= sound of bell
CR= Conditioned Response • Unlike the unconditioned response, this behavior does NOT occur naturally. The response must be learned. • Pavlov’s exp: Salivating when hearing bell is CR
