What is a vegan? • Vegans, in addition to being vegetarian do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.
What they eat and don’t eat Examples: • Meatless hot dogs • Soy products • All basic fruits and vegetables • Bread Pudding, brownies, and pies • Veggie pizza or pizza with soy cheese • They Don’t Eat • Basically anything that comes from an animal such as meat and diary.
The Risks of being a Vegan • The challenges include getting enough protein and B vitamins in your diet. • Iron and calcium are especially a concern for vegetarian woman and are more at risk then man of developing osteoporosis. • People who are vegans are at a greater risk of heart disease.
The health benefits of being a Vegan • Reduced saturated fats: By reducing the amount of diary products and meat you’ll reduce the amount of saturated fats. • Blood Pressure: A diet rich in whole grains is beneficial to your health in many ways including lowering high blood pressure. • Although people with a vegan diet have a greater risk of developing heart disease studies show that having a vegan diet can also reduce the risk.
Summary • A vegan diet eliminates meat, diary products, and anything that comes from an animal. Both risks and benefits are associated with having a vegan diet.
