SGH • Kidney biopsies between Jan 2001 to Oct 2003 • 24 children identified • 17 boys, 7 girls • Age range: 2 years to 16 years
Exclusion criteria • Children with nephrotic syndrome who had haematuria • Children with HSP who had a kidney biopsy for persistent proteinuria
Features • 6 children with associated proteinuria (2 nephrotic range) • 2 children with renal dysfunction(1 male, 1 female) • 2 children with familial haematuria • Except for haematuria, no complications of the biopsy
Results • 6 children with proteinuria (5 boys, 1 girl) MCGN, 3 Alport’s and 2 IgA • 3 children with familial haematuria 2 normal, 1 Alport’s • 2 children with renal dysfunction PSAGN
Literature • Birmingham Childrens’ Hospital • Renal biopsies in 322 children • 1975-1996 • Continuous microscopic / recurrent macroscopic haematuria for > 6 months
Results • IgA 78 children (24%) (61/17::M:F) • Alport 86 children (27%) (50/36) • Thin basement membrane 50 (15%) (18/32) • Hilar vasculopathy 28 (9%) (23/5) • Miscellaneous 32 (10%) (14/18) • Normal 48 (15%) (32/16)
