Whether Ryan is writing a service article, a trend essay, a profile of a local bar, or a narrative of heartbreak in Italy, his style is always like that of a friend sitting beside us chatting about things we want to know. Even though information can be pertinent and useful to us—helping us find reasonable parking, or a friendly campus bar and grill -- we feel he is talking to his readers personally. His final piece, a narrative about his heartbreak in Italy, turns out to be less about heartbreak and more about personal growth and maturity. It’s the story about Ryan deciding to study abroad with an ex-girlfriend. Yikes! But while recounting an emotional rollercoaster can fall into a trap of sentimentality, Ryan keeps the focus on honesty, growth, and learning. Ekkarat Ruanglertsilp Teaching Portfolio Ekkarat’s Teaching First-Year Composition Portfolio exudes personality and fun, two things that we might not always associate with First-Year English but which align perfectly with his idea that “learning with joy” is at the heart of his teaching and this portfolio. The beautiful Thai prints on his “About Me” page establish the notion that here is an instructor who wants to share his culture, a notion reinforced by the engaging photographs of himself that he includes. Along with the three writing projects he uses in English 101, there is a thoughtful explanation of each assignment that conveys clearly Ekkarat’s personal interpretation of the goals of the project and what students will learn. These assignments are enhanced by a series of pop culture images that delight and intrigue us. Ekkarat’s personality is further revealed in his very personal and fascinating Teaching Philosophy. He explains that his passion for the English language began when he was introduced to an entertainment news anchor on the E! Network. That television show helped him understand his need to find his own approach to learning English, and it is clear from this portfolio that he uses that knowledge as a foundation for his own teaching. She announces that she has designed this portfolio for current and prospective students, and each page fulfils that promise. Her articulate and thoughtful teaching philosophy emphasizes her role as a mentor, encouraging her students to see themselves as writers even if past experiences have led them to believe otherwise. It’s a powerful message for first-year students to hear as they embark on their college careers. Alexandra sharply focuses on the world today as it envelops us with changes, some not for the better. Speaking out, finding their individual voice, exercising it, and taking action, these are tools she encourages her readers to use to make a difference.
