PERIODS “What is a period?” A period is a punctuation mark that is used at the end of statements, or commands, to show that a complete thought has ended. Statements are also referred to as declarative sentences. Commands are referred to as imperative sentences. Periods are also used after abbreviations.
Statements and Commands E X A M P L E S The little boy watched the dog chase the cat up a tree. 1. I hope we will have a great time at school today. 2. Take your coat and boots off at the door. 3. Please get the mail out of the mailbox. 4. Sentences one and two are statements. Sentences three and four are commands. Both need periods.

QUESTION MARKS “When do you use question marks?” A question mark is used at the end of sentences that ask something. If you need a response, you are asking a question, which is also referred to as an interrogative sentence.
Examples of questions Questions Responses Yes, I am ready. Are you ready to go home? Is the test in Language tomorrow? No, it is not.

EXCLAMATION MARKS “When do you use exclamation marks?” An exclamation mark is used at the end of a sentence when you are expressing strong feelings about something. These sentences are referred to as exclamations.
Examples of Exclamations What beautiful colors the sand dunes are! How thick the dust is! What a great game! All three of the sentences above show strong feelings.
