  2. Why Should We Have Procedures in our Classroom? Procedures are a part of life. They allow complex operations to run smoothly with minimal confusion, low stress, and less wasted time. — Airports — Driving — Restaurants — Movies — School Where else are procedures practiced?

  3. Classroom and Academic Expectations • —The atmosphere in this classroom will be formal and academic, but comfortable. • —Students will work hard, learn math, and enjoy the process. • —If a visitor walked into our classroom during the day, what should they see?

  4. I expect students to do the following things to make sure the classroom runs smoothly: • Attend class, and arrive on time. • Have materials ready when the bell rings. • Listen when others are speaking. • Follow directions the first time they are given. • Get permission before speaking. • Be polite and respectful toward each other. • Stay on-task and focused on math.

  5. Academic Expectations • Come to class on time and have materials ready. • Follow teacher’s directions and complete assignments. • Work hard and enjoy the process. • Do your best. • Do not complain; it poisons the atmosphere.

  6. Daily Procedures

  7. Electronics Devices Procedure • NO Cell phones, portable game devices, MP3 Players or calculators allowed in class per student code of conduct. • If they are visible in the hallways or in class and you refuse to put them away they will be confiscated.

  8. Warm-Up Procedures • Read the warm-up assignment on the board and start working. • Do not wait for the teacher or the bell. • If you finish the warm-up assignment early, find something quiet to work on while others are finishing.

  9. Entering Class Procedures • You will enter the class on time and quietly. • Remove all necessary materials (pencils, composition book, folder, homework, etc.) from your back pack. Place your back pack under your seat, not in the aisle. You will sharpen your pencil before the bell rings (3 students at a time). • You will get out your warm-up notebook and begin answering the warm-up • Copy today’s agenda in your planner. (homework) • Wait quietly until the teachers begins the class

  10. Tardy Procedure • Enter the room quietly. Do not disrupt the class. • Sign in on Tardy Log • If you have a pass, clip to tardy log • Take your seat quietly and begin work immediately. • Tardies accumulate over the semester

Tardy Procedure Continued 1st & 2nd tardy Teacher verbal warning 3rd tardy Teacher contacts Parent (phone call) 4th tardy Teacher Intervention (before or after school detention) 5th tardy Administrative Referral (Administrative detention) 6th & 7th tardy Teacher contacts Parent (phone call) 8th tardy Administrative Referral (Saturday school) 9th tardy Teacher gives Final warning to student 10th tardy and beyond EXTERNAL SUSPENSION

  12. Eating In Class Procedure NO EATING, DRINKING, OR CHEWING GUM!

  13. Tornado Students will follow map route to cafeteria. Upon command, all will assume the protective position (crouch on knees and elbows, hands over back of head), facing the interior walls.

  14. Fire Drill Procedures • Fire drill leader and assistant leader will be appointed in each class • Exit through back door quickly (no running). • Go to the softball field behind the portables (silence while passing is mandatory). • Attendance will be taken… so we will remain together when we leave and enter the building. • Wait until you are called back inside. • Walk quickly and quietly back to the classroom. • Get seated and quickly return to the classroom task.

  15. Bathroom Procedure You will receive 3 bathroom passes each quarter. —The best time for bathroom use is during passing period. —You should not leave class to use the bathroom unless it is truly necessary. —You must get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. *Only ONE person at a time will use the bathroom*

  16. Appropriate Time Individual work Group work If it is the not the 1st or last 10 min of class Inappropriate Time 1st and last 10 minutes of class Teacher is talking or lecturing Video/Movie Presentations When can I use my pass?

  17. EXTRA CREDIT • Each pass is worth five extra credit points at the end of the quarter if you do not use them. • If you do not use all three passes you could have 15 extra credit points at the end of the quarter. • Use them Wisely

  18. Clinic Procedures Fill out clinic form and raise your hand silently and discreetly. You may go to the clinic ONLY IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. You may NOT leave the class during instruction time. When you return, enter quietly and return to your seat.

  19. Clinic Procedures Continued… Steps for clinic: 1. Student fills out a Clinic Request Form and teacher calls for an escort 2. Student signs in at the clinic 3. Parent contacted (to pick up student) 4. Minor and personal illness (10–15 minute clinic time allowed) 5. Student will return to class if a parent cannot be reached 6. No talking during time spent in clinic 7. Ice and bandages will only be given on a necessary basis to be taken back to class.

  20. Quiet Class 5……..4………3……..2……..1 When I get to one, everyone should be quiet, their eyes should be looking at me and their hands should be empty with everything put down on the table!

  21. Materials/Supplies Procedure • You are expected to be prepared and have your materials each day. • Borrowing materials waste instructional time. So, students who borrow materials and waste time will owe time either after class or after school. • The composition book will be used for notes, warm up activities, and vocabulary in chronological order. • The folder will be used as follows: Prongs- Policies and Procedures followed by tests, quizzes, and progress notes. Right Pocket-Classwork/Homework Left Pocket- Blank Loose Leaf Notebook Paper

  22. Classwork & Homework Procedure NO WORK IN INK ACCEPTED! • Classwork and homework is to be turned in on time…NO EXCUSES! • Work handed in late will receive a grade of “D” or less! Rewards *Homework Pass* *Positive Parent Contacts*

  23. Turn in Papers • First and Last name and period must be in the upper right hand corner of your assignment • WORK must be legible or it will not be graded • Absolutely no rough edges on paper • Pencil only or no credit will be given

  24. Turn in Papers Continued… • Failure to use the proper heading will result in a 5-10 point deduction. All papers should have the following information as indicated below: First & Last Name Date Period

  25. Late Work • You may turn in work 1 day late • Late work is given a grade of “D” or less! • Example: if you earned a B on your homework you would receive a “D” for your grade or an “F”

  26. Absent Procedure • When you are absent the first thing you should do is check the Work Missed Binder • You are responsible for any work that you have missed this includes: • All Warm-ups • Assignments/homework • Worksheets that were distributed • Lecture notes

  27. ABSENT WORK • Write ABSENT and the DATE you were absent at the top of the assignment and place it in the absent basket • You will have 2 days to turn in the work

  29. Listening to/Responding to Questions • When you have a question, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to who ever is speaking. • Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands. • Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson. • Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours.

  30. Lecture Procedures • Eye Contact • Listening • No Disturbances or Distractions • Absolutely NO TALKING… it throws off teacher concentration and classmate’s ability to focus • If you have a question RAISE your hand.

  31. Table Procedures • Use a quiet voice • Keep hands and feet to self • Clean up when finished

  32. Trash Procedures Place your trash on the corner of your table and discard it as you exit the room following dismissal.

  33. Classroom Visitors • When someone enters the classroom, knocks on the door, buzzes over the intercom, calls, etc., please continue to work without discussion. • Continue to work in class as you normally would.

  34. Procedure to Teach Procedures • The teacher will explain the importance  of procedures. • The teacher will explain the specific procedure.  (Explain) • Teacher and students will model, rehearse, and discuss the procedure. (Rehearse) • Teacher and students will practice procedures to be sure they are carried out properly.  (Reinforce)

  35. End of Period Dismissal Neither the clock nor the bell dismisses the class. The teacher dismisses the class. If students decide they want to run when Leaving, then I will start to dismiss the class one by one the following day.

  36. Thank You!!!! • Thank you for following the classroom procedures. This will allow us to have a wonderful, creative, and productive year in math class with minimal stress and wasted time. What other procedures should be added to your classroom list?

  38. Class Rules • Arrive on time and prepared to work. • Respect yourself and others. Be kind with your words and actions. • Follow directions the first time they are given. • Remain in your assigned seat at all times. • Raise your hand to speak and wait to be called on.

  40. Rewards • 1. Verbal Praise • Positive Parent Contact • Classroom or Team Rewards • Puzzles, Games, Computers, etc. • The Joy of Learning

  41. Rewards (Incentive Charts) • Students will be given one sticker each week if they don’t have any tardies or referrals and if they don’t break any of the classroom rules. • For every 3 stickers a student receives they will be rewarded with a homework pass in any quarter they wanted. • Students will be able to monitor their progress by checking their ID number on the incentive chart for their period. I will keep a log book of given homework passes. You can earn up to 3 h.w. passes per quarter.
