  1. ALGOMA DISTRICT BEST START NETWORK G O I N G F O R W A R D

  2. Become a student of change. It is the only thing that will remain constant.’ — Anthony J. D’Angelo

  3. CHANGES There have been some changes since westarted the Best Start Network. We have all heard in the news reports that the original federal/provincial agreements are cancelled as of March 31, 2007.We have the funding for Year 1 and expect to receive the funding for Year 2 as well.So how do we react to these changes?

  4. The Chinese symbol for crisis is in two parts. One part of the symbol signifies● danger● change● something to fear or be concerned about The other part of the symbol is opportunity. So how does this apply to us?● We may not be able to accomplish everything we had hoped for due to the changes. ● We need to seize the opportunity and use all our resources, ideas and partnerships. ● We need to be creative and innovative to accomplish as much as we can with the funding we have.

  5. Success comes from a cohesive effort We have already accomplished the huge feat of getting all our members together to share ideas and plan for a better future for all the children of Algoma. We can continue this work and accomplish our vision.

  6. EMBRACECHANGE ● Focus on our vision ● Choose our outlook ● Seek action ● Commit ourselves ● Continue to grow and develop

  7. R E V I E W ● Established the AD Best Start Network bringing together partnerships with all the different organizations and agencies that are involved in providing education and/or services for children. ● Submitted 3 Plans to the Ministry with the foundation of our Best Start Plan by October 31, 2005: - Child Care Plan - Transition Plan - Transitional Infrastructure Plan

  8. R E V I E W ● Submitted our final Phase 1 Integrated Implementation Plan by January 31, 2006. This was developed with consultation with all our Network partners and/or through public consultations in the service communities of our district. ● Through these processes, we identified priority projects based on all the information gathered. ● Year 1 projects are well underway.

  9. NEXT STEPS ●PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES We will continue to work with our Advisory Groups. We have started the first step, to identify the services currently being provided in the 13 service communities in our district. ●COMPLETING CHILD CARE PROJECTS CURRENTLY UNDERWAY The projects for Year 1 are underway and progressing. We will meet and/or surpass our target spaces for this first year.

  10. NEXT STEPS ●DEVELOPING COMMUNICATION AND MARKETING STRATEGY Increase community awareness of this first phase of Best Start child care spaces that are being created. ●REVIEW SPECIAL NEEDS RESOURCING Continue to improve the level of service to high need children and build community capacity to support all children with special needs.

  11. NEXT STEPS ●SUPPORT VIABILITY OF EXISTING COMMUNITY CHILD CARE SPACES Continue to work with all four school boards and child care centres.Link schools to child care centres already serving the school, to ensure that planning for new child care in schools does not duplicate current services. Provide opportunities for all centres to become linked to neighbourhood schools to ensure smooth transitions between child care and school.

  12. NEXT STEPS ●CONTINUE TO ENHANCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR CHILD CARE STAFF We look forward to information from the Best Start Expert Panel on Human Resources. We will continue to look for opportunities to offer training and professional development to Licensed Child Care operators and staff. Our goal is to ensure that parents and children receive the Quality Child Care they deserve.

  13. NEXT STEPS ●WORK WITH COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND SERVICE PROVIDERS TO DEVELOP HUMAN RESOURCES STRATEGIES With new spaces being created, we will need more educators. One of the approaches we will pursue is to work with the Sault College Program Director and ECE Program Director to develop strategies to recruit and retain qualified Early Childhood Educators in the profession in our district.

  14. MOVING FORWARD ● We have built or strengthened relationships among organizations most concerned with education, health, well-being, and the development of our children. ● Meeting and planning together has helped us to increase our understanding and we have all learned to appreciate and find ways for all of us to improve services to children. ● We have a common responsibility and desire: to ensure the very best outcomes for children in Algoma. For that reason we need to move forward and do as much as we can.

  15. F O C U S The Focus of the Best Start Early Learning and Care hubs will be on:● Child Care ● JK/SK ● Parenting programs ● Determine location of hubs in schools where possible, and other locations if necessary.● Continue to plan for the implementation of service co-ordination and integration.

  16. Reason to Move Forward Research has clearly shown that all children need high quality early childhood experiences and development programs, to ensure success in later years. There is an old African proverb: (Raffi/Clinton)“It Takes a Village to Raise A Child” Best Start builds on that philosophy by clearly defining the responsibilities of the whole community to meet the needs of children, so that they are ready to learn when they get to school.

  17. Together we need to continue to workon the plan and the vision thatwe have developed and make asmuch of it a reality as possible! Nancy MacLean, often refers to “The Little Engine That Could”, the children’s book about the little Blue Engine’s rallying mantra:“I think I Can, I think I Can” . . . We can be like the little Blue Engine and make a difference for the children!

  18. C O N C L U S I O N Seminar in Sault Ste. Marie The Starfish Story This story was apparently adapted fromThe Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley

  19. Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean for peace and quiet, and for inspiration to do his writing. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

  20. He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean.""I guess I should have asked, WHY are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

  21. Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."
