Objectives • Define pollution • Discuss different forms of pollution • Describe the origin of air, water & soil pollution. • Discuss bio-degradable & non-bio degradable materials • Give examples of these
Pollution • This is the contamination of the air, land or water by the discharge of harmful substances. • It causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem impacting on both its biotic and abiotic components.
Major forms of pollution • Air pollution. • Water pollution • Soil contamination • Littering • Radioactive contamination • Noise pollution • Thermal pollution
Pollutants • A pollutant is a waste material that pollutes air, water or soil. • It can take the form of chemical substances( contaminants) or energy, such as noise, heat, or light.
Air pollution • Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or damages the natural environment, into the atmosphere.
Water pollution • Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater) which affects plants and organisms living in there. • Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.
Soil pollution • Soil pollution is caused by the presence of man-made chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil environment. • This type of contamination typically arises from: 1. the rupture of underground storage tanks 2.application of pesticides 3. oil and fuel dumping, 4. leaching of wastes from landfills or direct discharge of industrial wastes to the soil.
Human activities • As seen in the air, land & soil pollution; human activities have negative impacts on the environment. • The use of modern technology that causes air, water & land pollution have aggravated this negative impact.
*Biodegradable waste • Biodegradable waste is a type of waste, typically originating from plant or animal sources, which may be broken down by other living organisms. • Waste that cannot be broken down easily by natural processes or by other living organisms may be called non-biodegradable.
Examples of biodegradable waste • human waste • manure • sewage • slaughterhouse waste • green waste • food waste • paper
Examples of non-biodegradable waste • plastics (polyethylene, nylon, rayon, polyester, pvc (polyvinyl chloride)). • metals (iron, platinum, steel, tin, aluminum, lead, silver, gold, mercury, zinc,) • ceramics (carbon fiber, fiberglass) • foams (cups, coolers)
