Manipulating Long Range Interactions in MesoscaleSystems Opportunity (WHY?) Approaches (HOW?) • Advances in determining the van der Waals (vdW) and Electrostatic (monopolar and multipolar) long range interactions in heterogeneous materials systems enable control of mesoscale assemblies. • The role of thermal fluctuations and disorder in vdW/Casimir interactions is well recognized • How these fluctuations couple to the conformational, electrostatic and polar interactions in these systems is critical to understand de/stabilization and dynamics. • These enable understanding the temporal evolution of our mesoscale assemblies. • Data from Vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy ab initio optical properties of large molecules • LRI computations for complex, anisotropic configurations • Combined vdW & ES interactions from Light scattering, osmostic stress SAXS, Nuetron scattering, Timeliness (WHY NOW?) Impact (SO WHAT?) • As we develop an integrated understanding of LRIs In real heterogeneous systems • We can control mesoscaleassembly & disassembly stability and destabilization dynamics and temporal evolution • Of functional energy materials Why now and not earlier? • Computation of vdW interactions are now tractable • Now able to study combined vdW & ES at the level of charge densities • Heterogenous materials systems, including inorganic and biomolecular of increasing importants for assembly French, R., Parsegian, V., Podgornik, et al., 2010. Retarded vdW Interactions in anisotropic systems • For optically and morphologically anisotropic systems • experimental & ab initio optical properties • Fully retarded vdW interactions and HamakerCoeffs. • Forces, Torques and Free Energies of Interactions Rajter, R.F., French, R.H., Ching, W.Y., Podgornik, R., Parsegian, V.A., 2012.
