  3. What is Rotary? Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

  4. What is Rotary? There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

  5. What is Rotary? As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

  6. Who is Paul Harris? Paul P. Harris was the founder of Rotary. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin on April 19, 1868, and spent his early years in Wallingford, Vermont, prior to attending the University of Vermont, Princeton University and the University of Iowa. 

  7. Who is Paul Harris? Paul Harris, along with three business associates, formed the world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905. His intention was to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth.

  8. Who is Paul Harris? The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices. Rotary’s popularity spread and within a decade, clubs were chartered from San Francisco to Winnipeg, Canada.

  9. Who is Paul Harris? By 1921 Rotary clubs were formed on six continents. The organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later. By 1925, Rotary had grown to 200 clubs with more than 20,000 members.

  10. The Rotary Foundation In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

  11. The Rotary Foundation Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property . . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.”

  12. The Rotary Foundation Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals.

  13. The Rotary Foundation The Great Depression and World War II both impeded the Foundation’s growth, but the need for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development. After Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

  14. The Rotary Foundation That year, the first Foundation program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships – was established. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.

  15. The Rotary Foundation The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was created as a part of that program in 1980. PolioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the next year brought Rotary Grants for University Teachers. The first peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation’s Peace and Conflict Studies Programs.

  16. The Rotary Foundation Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $2.17 billion. More than $200 million was donated in 2007 - 2008 alone. To date, 1,197,108 individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows – people who have given $1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in their name.

  17. The Rotary Foundation Such strong support, along with Rotarian involvement worldwide, ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for international understanding and world peace.

  18. What is a Paul Harris Fellowship? The Fellowship was established in 1957 in Paul Harris’ honor to express appreciation for contributions of $1,000.00 to the humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation.

  19. What is a Paul Harris Fellowship? • Any person, Rotarian or non-Rotarian is eligible to become a Paul Harris Fellow. • How do I qualify to become a Paul Harris Fellow? • Contribute $1,000.00 or more to the Rotary Foundation

  20. What is a Paul Harris Fellowship? • Contributions to the following programs shall qualify for Paul Harris Fellow Recognition credit: • Annual Program Fund • Approved Matching Grants – sponsor portion • PolioPlus • PolioPlus Partners • World Fund • Approved 3-H grants – sponsor portion

  21. What is a Paul Harris Fellowship? • In view of its separate recognition program, contributions to the Permanent Fund of The Rotary Foundation shall not qualify for Paul Harris Fellow Recognition credit.

  23. Understanding My Account • Recognition amount is the total Paul Harris Fellow recognition credited to an individual’s account. • Recognition may be achieved with one’s personal contributions to the Foundation - or- • A contribution made on behalf of the account holder

  24. Understanding My Account • What are Foundation Recognition Points? • These are points awarded in appreciation for contributions an individual personally makes above the initial $1,000.00.

  25. Understanding My Account • What can I do with my Foundation Recognition Points? • Donate points (100 minimum) to another individual(s) • Help them attain their Initial Paul Harris Fellowship • Help them attain their next Paul Harris level • Help make them Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members • Credited as an annual contribution of $100.00

  26. Understanding My Account • More about Foundation Recognition Points • Clubs and Districts can accumulate and transfer points to individuals. • Points count the same as cash for PHF levels only • Points don’t accumulate points • Points don’t count towards Major Donor status
