ASSAULT • Aggravated Assault – attack or attempted attack with a weapon whether or not injury occurs or without a weapon but serious injury occurs • Simple Assault – attack without a weapon with injuries requiring less than two days hospitalization. • Battery – attack by person to person that results in striking or touching the victim (battery is not recognized in New York State).
Assault and Abuse in the American Family Spousal Abuse: Assault against one’s own spouse – husband or wife. Seventy percent are listed as simple assault instead of aggravated assault with serious injury. Intimate Partner Violence: violent victimizations committed by current or former spouses or sexual partners. Assault and Abuse of Children, Sibling, Elder, and Parent: physical abuse, neglect, emotional abuse, abandonment, exploitation and sexual abuse. In New York State harassment is included an assault. Harassment – continuous vexatious attacks, questions, demands or unpleasantness.
SEXUAL ASSAULT • Information from Black’s Law and UCR Criminology Glick and Miller and New York State Police Officers’ law. • “Basically, one person imposes a sexual act on another person by force or threat of force.” • Rape: “unlawful sexual intercourse with a person without his/her consent.” • Forcible Rape: “assaults or attempts to commit rape by force or threat.” • Penal Code article 130.00-130-91 list of definitions and offenses.
Reasons for Rape • Male socialization: function of dominance • Psychological perspectives: mental illness • Power rape: insecurity with masculinity • Anger rape: hostility toward victim • Sadistic Rape: anger and power become eroticized
Classification/Division Divide and classify a topic by choosing a sorting system. From the previous topic of assault, Select one term and write a paragraph which you think illustrates that definition. For example, simple assault is a fight in the hall between two students in high school.
Writing Assignment • Write and introduction with at least three types of assault (Sexual Assault: basic sexual assault, rape, and forcible rape). • Write a paragraph illustrating each of the three categories. • Write a paragraph which wraps it up by restating or giving a relevant observation.
Format • Write five paragraphs of at least three sentences with a topic sentence in each. • Try to use transitional words like first, second, third, in addition, along with. • Write or type on every other line, 12 font, one inch margins. Approximately one page or 250 words.
