Modal (Auxiliary) Verbs. Modal verbs are auxiliary, or helper, verbs. These verbs are normally used with a primary action verb. Modal (Auxiliary) Verbs. The modal verb is conjugated to match the subject of the sentence.

  1. Modal (Auxiliary) Verbs • Modal verbs are auxiliary, or helper, verbs. • These verbs are normally used with a primary action verb.

  2. Modal (Auxiliary) Verbs • The modal verb is conjugated to match the subjectof the sentence. • The primary verb is carried as an infinitive at the end of the sentence.

  3. There are 6 modal verbs in the German language. • mögen like • möchten would like • können can • wollen want • dürfen may • müssen must • sollen should

  4. This is how we use this type of verb: • Take any sentence. IchspieleKarten. • Find the conjugated verb. IchspieleKarten. • Put the conjugated verb back to its infinitive form. spiele------ spielen

  5. Place the verb infinitive at the very end of the sentence. IchKartenspielen. • Choose a modal verb and conjugate it to match the subject. wollen --------- ichwill • Put the modal verb form where the original verb used to be. IchwillKartenspielen.
