  2. Where To Start • A poster presentation can be used to display a research or quality improvement initiative, a unique program or an approach to a clinical topic

Where To Start • Begin by making a list of the ideas you would like to present in the poster • Talk with your colleagues or your Nurse Educator about ideas to include in the poster • Contact an external resource like a member of the Nursing Research Committee (see Nursing Leadership Council website for membership list) or Biomedical Communications for assistance

  4. How Do I Decide the Format? • Poster presentations usually are presented in one of 2 formats – one single sheet design or individual pieces of paper mounted on mat board • The single sheet design will require the work of Biomedical Communications (BMC) and the cost will be higher than the mat board format • Mat board format can be done in a program like PowerPoint and the pieces of paper can be printed on a color printer and then mounted – by yourself or at BMC

  5. Components of the Poster Display • A title or a header board • A brief description of the research project or the program/approach • Visual images like pictures or graphs • Information about the project or program/approach (may need more than one) • Any conclusions or recommendations • Most mat board posters have a maximum of 12 boards

  6. Visual Materials • For each board try to follow the 6 by 6 rule – 6 or fewer lines per board with 6 or fewer words per line • Use short phrases • Be consistent with the template used • Title fonts should be 38 or 40 and text minimum of 24

  7. More About Getting Started • Make a list of all possible information you would like to include • Draw up draft boards to determine how many you have • Decide if you need to decrease or increase the number of boards • Decide about pictures or graphs

  8. Visual Impressions • Remember, people may be reading this from a bit of a distance so keep the font size easy to read • Try not to make the poster “too busy” • You can give contact information if people want more information
