Salt “melts” the ionic crosslinks (saloplasticity) allowing the material to be processed into new shapes. Saloplastic ‘melting’ of ionic crosslinks NEW BIOMATERIALS When these complexes are ultracentrifuged they yield tough microporous composites that mimic the structure of natural cartilage. We have shown that the dynamic mechanical properties of some compact polyelectrolyte complexes, CoPECs, are close to those of the intervertebral disk (Biomacromolecules). Schlenoff, Florida State University, DMR-0309441 Education & Collaborations: With partial support from this grant, eight students have completed their Ph.D degrees: Hassan Rmaile is now at Hercules Inc., Zhijie Sui (BioPharm Inc.) and David Salloum (P&G) finished in August 2004, and Houssam Jomaa (Intel) and Jad Jaber (Millipore Inc.) in 2005. Rana Jisr (Ph.D 2007) is an Assistant Professor at West Virginia. Claudiu Bucur (Ph.D 2008) is with the USDA. Undergraduate students Mark Wang, Rachel Bixler, Katherine Hart, Meaghen Gibson, Madison Hinton, Laura Irastorza and Brian Kilgore participated in the project. High school Hispanic student Francisco Birk participated for 2 semesters and is now at the University of Florida. We have enjoyed collaborations with Biology colleagues Tom Keller and Bryant Chase, and access to the neutron source at NIST for structural studies of our thin films. In the International area, a Fulbright Postdoctoral associate from France participated.
