Communication Gap in the US Immigration system – A case study
Angle • The present Immigration portal is very generic, does not DEAL WITH SPECIFIC SCENARIOS • Present web site is only capable of answering Yes/No questions • The way information is laid out makes it difficult to get specific information (such as how to change your status, obtain new visa, renew expired visa, etc.) • Search option retrieves generic results • Outcome: long wait time, insufficient information, wrong paperwork, rejection of case/visa • People affected are: International Students Temporary Workers …………………many Audience http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis
Deliverables A Documentary Film (composition of video, audio)ANDA web-based report The reason it is web-based because I can share it with others (forum) and take their input even after I am done with this project
CanonicalApproach • Arrangement –the organization of visual elements so that readers can see their structure • Emphasis –making certain parts more prominent than others by changing its size, shape and color. • Clarity –helps the reader to “decode the message, to understand it quickly and completely” • Conciseness –generating designs that are appropriately succinct to a particular situation • Tone –tone reveals the designer’s attitude towards the subject matter (Kostelnick and Roberts, Source:Wikipredia )
Audience Analysis Analysis - Who are “they”? Understanding - What is their knowledge of the topic? Demographics - What is their age, sex, educational background? Interest - Why are they there (reader)? Who asked them to be there? Environment - Where will I “stand”? Can they all “see & hear me”? Needs - What are their needs? What are your needs (both functional and intellectual tools ) as a communicator? Customized - What specific needs do you need to address? Expectations - What do they expect to learn or hear from you?

Research Needs I intend to engage folks from International Center at MSU, international students on campus and my friends from universities across US. I do not need to be physically present outside the campus for this project. I would interface with folks outside Michigan mostly by e-mail and phone.
Schedule • Preproduction Phase – Finish by Nov 11 • Production Phase I – Finish by Nov 16 • Production II – Finish by Nov 23 • Post Production Phase I – Finish by Nov 28 • Post Production Phase II - Finish by Dec 7
LongRun... • My recommendation may help immigration department (USCIS) improve their communication model (web site, call center, e-mail) • Real life scenarios, survey data, and interviews may help users (non-immigrants) find right information • Create awareness
Feedback scope and the final outcome of this project. Your thoughts, input, insights about the problem the project is trying to address Please suggesttechniques or approaches that will be best for the type of my project. I would need help from folks who are well-versed with movie making technique, particularly filming documentary films. The research pattern/rules I should follow for working on this type project
