  2. Competition Map ProductionOverview • What step is this? • After • Permissions gained • Overlaps with • Armchair-setting and Mapping with OCAD • Setting and Vetting • Quick discussion on • WARA map standards • Characteristics of WARA events Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  3. Competition Map ProductionGetting Your Map • You need a map in electronic form. • Re-using an area? • You may have data, or it can be delivered very quickly from map archive. • New Area? • Provide grid references to Technical Officer. • Who will order data from Landgate, and convert to OCAD using standard symbols. • You wait. Could be several weeks. Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  4. Competition Map ProductionWhy OCAD? • OCAD – Orienteering CAD • Dominant program for orienteering/rogaining maps. • By standardising: • Standard symbol set developed (ongoing) • Archive of maps in same format. Can be re-used by future setters. • WARA “workflow” for web and newsletter uses OCAD. • Commercial Printer understands OCAD. • Using another CAD program may life easier for you, but not for other volunteers. 5. Competition Map ProductionGetting Grid References • From topographic map • 6 400 000 North • 475 000 East • Don’t give lats and longs! Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  6. Competition Map ProductionPutting the Pieces Together • You are given the components needed… Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  7. Competition Map ProductionHey Presto! • And you will make… this afternoon… Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  8. Competition Map ProductionCharacteristics • Characteristics of WARA Maps/Events • 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 rarely • A3 (24 and 12 hour) or A4 (most 6 hour events) • Standards to abide by (no choice) • Maximum of 72 controls – don’t have to use them all. • Punch card is in rows of 6, each row must have same value – in case of power/computer failure. • Control values are multiples of 10, from 10 to 100. • The future • Different numbering system. May become standard? Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  9. Competition Map ProductionMaking your map • You will get a base map, and some 1-to-1 OCAD tuition. • You don’t worry about standards – colours and line size for symbols. Done for you. Don’t change these. • All you need to do is: • Work out the map layout. • Place the controls, patrolled roads & out-of-bounds on the map • Crop out unwanted map data, add map attributes: • Date, WARA website, scale, legend, logos, setters and vetters, farmer names (useful for future reference), possession statement… All listed in manual. • During field work – make map corrections: new roads, dams, buildings. DEMONSTRATION Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  10. Competition Map ProductionWhat Not to Include • Internal farm fences. • Not reliable. Farmers move these around. Data may be old. • Bare rocks. • Unreliable. May be a clearing. Unmapped bare rocks exist. • Problem! • Good teams will use the features like a street directory. Novice teams will make false assumptions and potentially go wrong. • Your choice – WARA not prescriptive on this issue. Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  11. Competition Map ProductionGetting The Map Printed • Warn Bunbury Print 4 weeks before. • Wait for close of entries (10 days before) • The bulk of entries arrive in last days. • Find out count of entrants and number of maps to make. Ask Technical Officer. • Send OCAD file, special fonts, graphics to Bunbury Print by e-mail. Provide courier address for map delivery. Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar

  12. Competition Map ProductionA Few More Things • WARA can loan an A3 colour printer with “special” paper. • Ask if you get stuck! Some aspects are tricky – particularly cropping and map layout. Western Australian Rogaining Asscociation Setting and Vetting Seminar
