  2. Sub Screening: Getting each person on the right seat on the bus! • Who? • What? • When? • Where? • Why? • How?

Sub screening: who? • All eligible and interested individuals who are qualified to work as a substitute. • Qualifications: • At least 64 college credit hours (for sub teachers) • High school diploma (for para subs) • Likes children (preferred) • Desire to ensure that instructional material is presented in the absence of the teacher/staff member.

Sub Screening: What? • Face to face interactive process facilitated by building level administration/staff. • Screening questions relate to classroom instruction, management, communication and general school procedures. • The process is similar to an interview but only lasts 10-15 minutes per candidate. • Allows candidates an opportunity to share their strengths and experiences in working with children.

  5. Sub screening: when • 4 times annually • Tentatively: June, August, December, April

  6. Sub screening: where • A space large enough for 10-12 interview stations for candidates. (Could be one large room.) • A facility that is easy to locate and has ample parking.

Sub screening: why?? • The goal is to create an opportunity for substitutes to have a face to face meeting with building level administrators and staff to discuss opportunities for employment. • Building level administrators and staff have an opportunity to find quality substitutes who will make a difference in the classroom. • This process also allows administrators to find quality candidates for permanent positions.

  8. Sub screening: how? • Applicants apply to work as substitutes during specified windows of time. • Once they have an approved background check, they are scheduled for a screening time. • Screeners are secured for the big day – you need 2 screeners per table. • Screenings are scheduled every ten minutes. • Screeners are provided with questions to ask each candidate and assign a score based on the rubric provided.

Sub screening: how? • A successful candidate will earn a 75% or higher to be invited to training. • Each candidate receives a piece of paper detailing next steps in the process. • All candidates who receive a passing score are notified via email of training dates. Those who did not earn a passing score receive an email inviting them to apply again during the next application window.

Sub training: what? • Basic training on Restraint and Seclusion and Sub Placement System (AESOP) • Detailed training on classroom management, communication, general classroom instruction, substitute expectations and basic school procedures. • Review of the substitute handbook and completion of new employee paperwork.

  11. Sub training: when? • Approximately one week after sub screening. • Four times annually. • Two sessions – morning and afternoon for 3 hours.

  12. Sub training: where? • A space large enough for 50-75 people during each session. • Seating is classroom style. • A facility that has a projector and technology that supports your presentation. • A facility that is easy to find and has ample parking.

  13. Sub training: why? • To ensure that substitutes are prepared to provide instruction and support to our kids in the absence of permanent classroom staff. • To provide substitutes with an opportunity to learn and ask questions prior to walking in the school setting. • To set realistic expectations of a substitute in Fayette County Public Schools.

  14. Sub training: how? • HR staff and school staff work together to provide all aspects of training. • HR staff: Restraint and Seclusion, Sub Placement System, New Employee Paperwork • School staff: Classroom management/Sub Expectations
