Imagery – Advertising Guide to PowerPoint presentation
Things to add (how to use PowerPoint effectively) • Scan in your ad (if print) or grab from Internet, if you can. Use Aussie adds, not US etc • Use headings and dot points: images, text, strategies (stereotypes etc) • Highlight examples and illustrations • Establish a line of “argument” – i.e. how are your ads linked? (Remember that you are always presenting a persuasive point of view)
Things to avoid Ie; DO NOT: • Write everything on the PowerPoint slide • Turn to read off the slide • Have inappropriate slide techniques (slide/spin etc) that just aren’t necessary (but these can work, if related to the product/ads’ theme …)
Suggested format • What IMAGE – idea – does the ad, or do the ads, USE to attempt to influence the viewer’s or reader’s feelings about the product? • Describe the main thing you want to emphasise about that ad (a contention?) • Design elements – focus on the hotspots and key features – • (colour, SIZE!font, layout…) • Language aspects – analyse the text, looking for puns, humour, allusions… • Themes, appeals, humour … • Comment on intended audience • Comment on intended effect • Aim to make links between your ads – you are giving a cohesive presentation, not just separate analyses…(finish with a conclusion?)
Strategies & techniques ... • Association with (unrelated but) attractive elements (for example, the linking by name or placement of a product with the wilderness) • Stereotypes (motherhood is a great one here, but also gender-linked roles, or national pride) • Doubles entendre (particularly sexual innuendo) • Humour • The beauty myth • And secret fears …
