Chapter 1

1. Chapter 1 Mrs. Bennet has exciting news to tell her husband Mr. Bennet. She tells him that a young man from England just moved to town. This man is of a large fortune.

2. “What is his name?” asked Mrs. Bennet. Mrs. Bennet says that his name is Bingley. She wants Mr. Bennet to go meet Bingley. Mrs. Bennet wants Bingley to marry one of their daughters.

3. Chapter 2 Mr. Bennet visited Bingley. He tells his family and all of the girls are very happy. They look forward to meeting a new acquaintance.

4. Chapter 3 A few days after Mr. Bennet visited Bingley, Bingley returned the visit. He sat in Mr. Bennet’s library but never met the girls.

5. There was an assembly a few days later and Bingley brought 2 of his sisters and another young man. The young man he brought was Mr. Darcy.

6. Darcy was tall, handsome and quite wealthy, but he was also proud, conceited and impolite. Bingley too was handsome but extremely friendly, polite, and danced the whole evening. A very amiable man.

7. Bingley tried to get Darcy to dance. He said that there were plenty of good looking women at the assembly. Darcy told Bingley that he was dancing with the only pretty one, referring to Jane, one of Mr. Bennet’s daughters.

8. The assembly ended and everyone had a great time. When the family got back to their home in Longbourn, Mr. Bennet was awake, waiting to hear how it went.

9. Chapter 4 After the ball, Jane and Elizabeth stayed up late talking. They talked about how much Jane liked Mr. Bingley. Jane and Elizabeth talked about how they did not like Mr. Darcy. They thought he was proud and rude.

10. After the ball, Mr. Bingley, his 2 sisters, and Mr. Darcy talked about the ball. Mr. Bingley liked Jane and his sister thought she was sweet.

11. Mr. Darcy didn’t really like anyone at the ball and thought that Jane smiled too much.

12. Chapter 5 The next day Elizabeth’s friend Charlotte came over to the house. She told Elizabeth that she heard Mr. Bingley say that Jane was the prettiest girl at the ball.

13. Chapter 6 The Bennet family, except Mr. Bennet, go and visit Mr. Bingley’s sisters at their home in Netherfield.

14. Jane is liking Mr. Bingley more and more, but she is staying calm and not acting boy-crazy.

15. Mr. Darcy, who said he didn’t like anyone at the ball, actually liked Elizabeth. Instead of talking to her to show he likes her, Mr. Darcy is eavesdropping onherconversation.

16. Elizabeth speaks to Mr. Darcy and he acts shy with her. They are asked to dance, but Mr. Darcy will not dance with Elizabeth even though he likes her.

17. Chapter 7 A couple days after visiting at Mr. Bingley’s, Jane receives a letter from Bingley’s sisters, inviting her to lunch.

18. Jane goes to lunch, but Mrs. Bennet, who is always trying to find a way to get her daughters married, makes Jane take the horse instead of the carriage.

19. Because Jane takes the horse, she gets caught in the rain and ends up having to stay at Netherfield because she becomes too ill to travel home.

20. Because Jane was ill, Elizabeth walked 3 miles to Netherfield to see her and keep her company. Elizabeth and Bingley’s sisters stayed with Jane to keep her company during the day.

21. Chapter 8 During dinner, Elizabeth ate with the Bingleys and Mr. Darcy while Jane rested. While Bingley’s sisters were nice to Jane and Elizabeth, they spoke poorly of them when they weren’t in the room.

22. The sisters talked about the Bennet sisters not marrying wealthy men because they were poor country girls. Mr. Darcy ignored the sisters because he still liked Elizabeth.

23. After dinner, everyone moved into the parlor to play cards. Elizabeth read instead. The Bingley sisters made fun of her for reading, however Mr. Darcy defended her and said that an accomplished woman is one who expands her mind by reading.

24. Chapter 9 The next day, Mrs. Bennett came to Netherfield to check on Jane. While there, Mrs. Bennett made silly comments and makes a fool of herself. Lydia came to Netherfield with Mrs. Bennet. She asked Mr. Bingley to hold a ball, and he promised he would, when Jane felt better.

25. Because Mrs. Bennet acted so foolish, Bingley’s sisters made fun of her after they left. Mr. Darcy did not say anything mean.

26. Chapter 10 After Mrs. Bennet’s visit to Netherfield, Elizabeth runs into Mr. Darcy while out walking. He walks with Bingley’s sisters and they make fun of Elizabeth for having a ridiculous mother.

27. Chapter 11 Jane is starting to feel better, so shejoins everyone for dinner. Bingley and his sisters are very nice to Jane which makes Elizabeth happy.

28. While Jane is talking with Bingley after dinner, Elizabeth takes a walk around the room with one of Bingley’s sister.

29. While they are walking, Miss Bingley flirts with Darcy. He does not flirt back, but starts talking with Elizabeth. Miss Bingley changes the subject since Darcy isn’t paying her any attention.

30. Chapter 12 Two days later, Jane and Elizabeth leave Netherfield and return home to Longbourn. Mrs. Bennet is sad that they left Netherfield because she wanted Jane to spend more time with Bingley.

31. Chapter 13 The next morning, Mr. Bennet announces that their cousin, Mr. Collins is coming to visit. Mr. Collins is to inherit Longbourn when Mr. Bennet dies.

32. Mr. Collins is a nerdy preacher who thinks very highly of himself. He gives Mrs. Bennet and the daughters a lot of compliments.

33. Chapter 14 Mr. Collins has dinner with the Bennet’s. At dinner, Mr. Collins talks about his Patroness, Lady Catherine De Bourgh.

34. Following dinner, Mr. Collins reads a very boring book aloud to the family.

35. Chapter 15 After a boring night of listening to Mr. Collins, The Bennet girls travel into town, Meryton, to see the soldiers. They meet a handsome soldier named Wickham.

36. Darcy and Bingley ride up on horses and see the Bennet's are with Wickham. Elizabeth notices that Darcy and Wickham are not friendly with each other.

37. When Darcy and Bingley leave, the Bennetsaccept an invitation to dine with the soldiers that night.

38. While the Bennet daughters are at dinner, Mrs. Bennet learns that Mr. Collins came to Longbourn to select a wife from one of Mrs. Bennet’s daughters. Mrs. Bennet encourages him to marry Elizabeth.

39. Chapter 16 At the dinner party, Elizabeth sits next to Wickham, who is charming and pleasant. Elizabeth learns that Darcy and Wickham grew up together.

40. Wickham told Elizabeth that Darcy was a selfish, spoiled child who grew up to be an unjust man.

41. Elizabeth believes all of these stories that Wickham is telling her. She walks away from the evening thinking Wickham is a very noble man.

42. Chapter 17 Bingley comes to Longbourn to announce that he is having a ball at Netherfield.

43. All of the girls are very excited about the ball. Mr. Collins is going too, and he has asked Elizabeth to save him the first 2 dances. She says yes, but is disappointed because she wanted to dance with Wickham.

44. Chapter 18 Days later it is time for the ball. Elizabeth is disappointed because Wickham isn’t there.

45. Mr. Darcy asks Elizabeth to dance. She dances with him even though she doesn’t want to . During their dance she brings up Wickham.

46. Darcy doesn’t enjoy talking about Wickham. After their dance, Jane comes over and tells Elizabeth that Bingley says Wickham is a scoundrel. Elizabeth doesn’t believe her.

47. The ball turns out to be a disaster. Mr. Collins embarrasses himself in front of Mr. Darcy, Mrs. Bennet is bragging about an advantageous marriage, Mary humiliates everyone with her poor singing…Elizabeth is mortified.

48. Chapter 19 The day after the ball, Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth. She declines the offer of marriage to Mr. Collins.

49. Chapter 20 Mrs. Bennet, who knew about the proposal, congratulated Mr. Collins, but he told her Elizabeth said no.

50. Mrs. Bennet tells Mr. Bennet to force Elizabeth to marry Mr. Collins. She tells Elizabeth that she will never speak to her again if she doesn’t marry Mr. Collins.
