Monday, Mar 3rd, 2014 • Did you know… • The catfish father keeps the eggs in his mouth until they’re ready to hatch. • Corneas (in eye) are the only tissues that don't require blood.
Do Now: Mar 3rd • What are the benefits to drilling a deeper well? • Describe how hot and cold convection currents usually flow. • is the major forces that drives the ocean’s surface currents.
Shoreline Stabilization Methods • Hard/Structural stabilization: • Hardened structures protect shoreline • E.g., bulkheads, sea walls, jetties, groins, etc. • Soft/Non-structural stabilization: • Organic materials/plants protect shoreline • E.g., vegetation, sand dunes, beach nourishment, etc.
A. Bulkhead • Wall holds soil when water comes in contact • Some protection from waves
B. Seawall • Wall holds sand • More protection from waves • Farther back, less water contact
C. Jetty • Piles of boulders/concrete on either side of coastal inlet • Channel to ocean stays open
D. Groin • Perpendicular to shore • Trap sand as it moves up & down beach
E. Breakwater • Large rock pile built parallel to shore • Breaks up incoming waves that can easily erode shore
A. Beach Nourishment • Depositing new sand on beach to widen/replenish it
B. Sand Dunes • Sand hills parallel to shoreline • Vegetation holds sand particles
