How the US Impacted the War • The USA joined the war in April 1917 • The US used the Selective Service Act to provide fresh new troops to the Allied Powers who were weary from 3 years of warfare • The US provided necessary economic support for the Allies • Saved them from bankruptcy • US support starts slow but ends up being a major turning point in the war

The War Ends! • When: November 11, 1918 • Germans sign an armistice with the Allies • Armistice: an agreement to end fighting • Over 9 million soldiers dead • Allies blame Central Powers • Allied leaders meet in Paris in Jan. 1919 • Woodrow Wilson: President of the US • Georges Clemenceau: French Leader • David Lloyd George: Prime Minister of Britain

Peace Treaties • Treaty of Versailles • Germany forced to take blame • had to pay 30 billion dollars of debt • Limits placed on the size of the German military • Lost hundreds of sq. miles of land back to France • Took away overseas colonies • Germany had no choice but to sign • Allies made separate treaties for other Central Powers

Consequences of WWI in Europe • Germany holds a grudge • New countries are created (Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Trans-Jordan, Hejaz, Hasa) • League of Nations is formed to make peace in Europe **Write this down**

  10. Consequences in Russia and the USA • Czar of Russia is overthrown • Russian Revolution creates new communist government • After a great time of prosperity during and after WWI, the Great Depression hits the US (1929), and eventually everyone else.
