Syllable Awareness • Identify syllables in words by tapping the beat (sometimes we encourage children to put their hand under their chin, as they say a word.) • Finish the name • Build syllables into words • Sort objects/pictures according to number of syllables
Applying Syllable Awareness • In P2 and P3 we encourage children to ‘Have a go’ at using syllables, to help them to spell words independently. • Syllables ~ blocks of sound • E.g. Goblin = Gob + lin Magnet = Mag + net
Rhyme Awareness • Encourage children to finish lines of familiar rhymes • Play rhyming gamese.g. match objects that rhyme • Generate rhyming words • Change familiar rhymes • I spy something that rhymes with . . .
Blending and segmenting individual sounds • Identify a word when presented with its segmented sounds • Segment words into sounds

The boys’ arrows were nearly gone so they sat down on the grass and stopped hunting. Over at the edge of the wood they saw Henry make a small bow to a girl who was coming down the road. She had tears in her dress and tears in her eyes. She gave Henry a note which he brought over to the group of young hunters. Read to the boys it caused great excitement. After a minute but rapid examination of their weapons they ran down to the valley. Does were standing at the edge of the lake, making an excellent target.
