  9. Playing pattern Many long balls played back to front, depending on ANELKA (39) to gain possession. He then receives quick support mainly from DIOUF (21) on his left and NOLAN (4) on right: many long clearances aimed for NOLAN (4) pushing forward on the right side with ANELKA (39) looking for flick on

  10. Type of team Inconsistent! Capable of unlikely win, but there is a lack of assurance in their side; they seem lacking in confidence, and very unsettled when behind. On this occasion poor in central defence and lacking in “legs” throughout the side – only ANELKA (39) with any real pace. A SOFT side: no real heart!

  11. Pace? Only ANELKA (39) with any real pace: a very pedestrian side, especially in m/fd where there is a lack of energy and mobility.

  12. Best in air? NOLAN (4) vg in air CID (15) & MEITE (5) – good in air ANELKA (39) - always dangerous HUNT (2) – should be vg because of his size, but not always used at corners, so this tells a tale!! Bolton always dangerous at set-pieces!

  13. Physical? Not particularly physical: NOLAN (4) and McCANN (19) do compete as do centre backs, CID (15), MEITE (5) and especially sub, O’BRIEN (31). HUNT (2) a tough guy.

  14. Not physical? Sub, WILHELMSSON (10) very timid; DIOUF(21) is not the bravest!

  15. How to beat them Unsettle them quickly: early goal! Be positive as Bolton are nervy and hesitant. ANELKA (39) is very much the danger man, must be watched, and NOLAN’S (4) threat in the air has to be nullified. Quick counter attacks caused them problems here, but it is likely that the centre-backs will be replaced! There is a lack of pace in the side so HIGH TEMPO play advised.

  16. Throw-ins NB: Long throws from HUNT (2) to NOLAN (4) in particular, are equivalent of corner kicks. No obviously prepared throws; SPEED (6) comes late from centre m/fd to receive throws from both sides.

  17. Goalkeeper’s distribution JAASKELAINEN (22) very comfortable in pass back situation; right footed but good enough on left; takes all free kicks in own half and delivers long and accurately: throws, seldom used, were first class.

  18. Off-side? No! Back four don’t push out quickly, nor do they close game up as a confident defence would. A lot of space in front of them in which to create!

Back four Nicky HUNT (2) 1.85 (6’1”) Age 23: 120 games for BW: tall, dominant figure at the back; very serviceable; reads game better than hitherto; supports down the side; left foot weak; great LONG THROW = a corner kick; sound performer; replaced at end, DAVIES(14) coming on. Abdoulaye MEITE (5) 1.85 (6’1”) Age 26: Ivory Coast 24 caps: ex-Marseille 116 games; 40 games for BW; ok, but not comfortable against Johnson and Yakubu; dodgy in air especially when Yobo and Lescott came up for corners; tried to use the ball, but uncertain when pressurised; poor. Gerard CID (15) 1.88 (6’2”) Age 24: ex-Bordeaux, 19 games: 6 for BW; inexperience all too evident; a very unsure performance, hesitant and slack; not surprisingly replaced at interval by O’BRIEN(33) as his basic error caused the opening goal. Jlloyd SAMUEL (3) 1.80 (5’11”) Age 26: Trinidad & Tobago: 169 games Aston Villa: 6th game BW; tidy, assured full back; left-footed; defended solidly and got forward on occasion; no frills; consistent attempt to use ball.

Midfield three Mikel ALONSO (18) 1.78 (5’10”) Age 27: 103 games for Real Sociedad: 6th game on loan at BW: disappointing contribution; did not impact much on the game: lightweight appearance and performance; too often on fringe, but hit a magnificent shot against the crossbar. (brother is with Liverpool) Gary SPEED (6) 1.76 (5’9”) Age 37: Welsh internationalist, 85 games, 7 goals: Leeds 248/ 39g: Everton 58/16g: Newcastle213/29g: BW 113/14g: still outstanding: left footed; legs have gone a bit, but the brain alert: vg passer; superb in air; controlled thing well as the sitting m/fd player. Gavin McCANN (19) 1.80 (5’11”) Age 29: 1 England cap – no more on this display: ex-Everton, 11 games; Sunderland 116 games, Aston Villa, 110 games:6 BW: a disappointing display, although he did try to make telling passes; very two footed, predominantly right; less energy from him than seen in the past.

Front three Kevin NOLAN (4) 1.82 (6’0”) Age 25: 249 games, 35 goals for BW: worked hard supporting main striker, ANELKA(39) on his right side; vg in air: a competitor; no silky touches, but plenty of effort. Nicolas ANELKA (39) 1.85 (6’1”) Age 28: France 39caps 9 goals: Arsenal 65/23: R Madrid 19/2: PSG 49/11: Liverpool 20/4: Man City 89/38: Fenerbace 39/14: BW 41/16: excellent all round display highlighted by a brilliantly volleyed goal: the perfect striker on this evidence! El Hadji DIOUF (21) 1.82 (6’0”) Age 26: Senegal 58 caps, 21 goals: Lens 54/18: Rennes 28/1: Liverpool 55/3: BW 85/17: worked extremely hard; ran at defenders with determination and skill; good, threatening performance; took all corners, left and right; delivery vg: response only from ANELKA(39).

Subs Andy O’BRIEN (31) 1.77 (5’10”) Age 28: Republic of Ireland 26 caps: Bradford 133: Newcastle United 120: Portsmouth 32 games: 3rd game BW: badly needed in defence after an uncomfortable performance from CID(15) in the first half: showed more defensive qualities than the guy he replaced: not quick, but strong and determined. Sound if unspectactular. Christian WILHELMSSON (10) 1.77 (5’10”) Age 27: Swedish Internationalist, 34 caps, 3 goals: ex- Anderlecht 90/13g: Nantes 13/1 loan Roma 19/1: loan BW: very poor as usual: must have good agent to get him good clubs!! Timid, weak: has basic attributes, but never really excels in dribbling, passing or crossing – nothing to commend him! Kevin DAVIES (14) 1.83 (6’0”) Age 30: ex-Chesterfield 129/22: Blackburn R 23/1: Southampton 107/19: BW 142/32: very popular when introduced as sub, but on for 3min only: strong and enthusiastic. Unused: Ali AL HABSI (26) 1.94 (6’4”) Daniel BRAATEN (27) 1.83 (6’0”)

Corners for (Bolton) DIOUF(21) NOLAN(4) ANELKA(39) MEITE(5) CID(15) SPEED(6) ALONSO(18) McCANN(19) SAMUEL(3) HUNT(2) With Everton leaving two up at corners against, it was necessary for BOLTON to leave 3 men back, McCANN(19), in front of two markers, HUNT(2) and SAMUEL(3). NOLAN(4) positions himself in front of the ‘keeper and ANELKA(39) at the back of the 6yd box. ALONSO(18) and SPEED(6) edge of box, centre backs, CID(15) and MEITE(5) attacking the driven ball. Suspect HUNT(2) will come up if only one player to ‘mark’ at the half way line. Same set up, same delivery from same player, DIOUF(21), from left side, only it then becomes an in-swinging corner.

  30. Referee Mr P WALTON was an over fussy official who had a poor game. He does not like dialogue with players, waving away any who wish to talk. Booked three visiting players, one BAINES (3) in particular was bizarre. He seemed to accuse the player of wasting time when, in fact, there were no throw options available. Not at all an impressive referee who was flustered too easily.

  31. Defending No real pace at the back. Centre backs, CID (15) and MEITE (5), lack understanding and mobility. Goalkeeper JAASKELAINEN (22) vg but shows signs of frustration at colleagues in front. Defending set-pieces efficient: good corner kick organisation; well organised defensive wall. Right back, HUNT (2), doesn’t stop crosses efficiently Slow to clear penalty box after ‘keeper has possession, especially at corners against. Don’t close game up leaving large space between back 4 and midfield 3 midfield 3 play very tight, often leaving wide opposing players in a 1 v 1 situation. Poor in the air defensively. Fail to close down opponents when in shooting range. Tendency to be caught ball watching.

  32. Attacking ANELKA (36) a brilliant one man attacker – pace and game awareness. SPEED’S (6) use of ball from deep position is excellent. Lack of quick support to ANELKA (39) Only ALONSO (18) readily willing to shoot from distance Reluctance to deliver crosses. Real threat from long throws, especially from HUNT (2) on right; NOLAN (4) the target. Much “Route 1” playing method – long balls to ANELKA (39). Midfield players, ALONSO (18), SPEED(6) and McCANN (19) ages 27, 37 and 29, don’t have “legs”. Corner kick delivery from DIOUP (21) vg from both sides.
