Soccer Problems • We hardly have any scoring chances • Forwards lose the ball too quickly • Forwards receive low supply of passes from their own defenders • Poor link up between the midfielders and the forwards • Defensive midfielders are not delivering enough long passes • Defenders are too slow in the buildup -- they do not play quickly enough
Defining Soccer Problems • What is going wrong in relation to the plan • Which players and positions are involved in the problem ? • When does the problem occur ? • In which part of the field does it occur ? • Are the problems technical, tactical, physical or attitudinal ?
MATCH ANALYSIS Czech Republic vs Belarus
Czech Republic in Possession • Buildup form keeper often through Kadlec Kadlec looked to Nemecek • Use of left flank dangerous with: Smejkal, Berger, Kuka/Siegel • Smejkal was a driving force • Free kick to Kadlec on that side (1-0) • Berger’s goal came from Kadlec to Frydek (2-0) • Berger’s basic position was on the right, but often moved to the left (left-footer)
Czech Republic in Possession -- 2 • Berger and Frydek supported strikers – lots of diagonal runs • Kuka fast on the ball - stayed up (offside ?) • Siegel – crossed with Kuka physically strong -- near post runs on CK • Counterattack very dangerous • 2nd half – long balls, fast counterattacks through short, fast, passing moves
Czeck Republic After Loss of Possession • Latal / Smejkal slow to transition to defense • Kadlec had to cover flank several times • Latal beaten for speed • Nemecek (covering position) pushed out to flank -- played vs Metlicki (playmaker) • Physically hard, very hard, if necessary • Repka and Hapal tough defenders • Good in air – get inside of their man • Kadlec always covered – controlled the defense • Not fast, but reads game well
Czech Republic After Loss ofPossession • Retreat to centerline and deeper • Gave a way a lot of space to build up in • Kuka and Siegel worked hard covering • Siegel more effective defensively • Frydak and Berger slow to fall back with only limited defensive qualities • Latal and Smejkal covered flanks -- not always properly positioned, especially space in deep corners
Czech Republic After Loss of Possession • Defended 10-15 meters in front of penalty area, sometimes, closer • Defended compactly with 8 defenders • Left a lot of space in midfield on transition • Did not use offside trap (except for free kick, goal)
Comments and Observations About Match Tactics • Very strong start by Czechs – 2 goals in first 18 min and other good chances • Let the game get away a bit • 2nd half – very dangerous counterattacks • Did not use numerical advantages very well • Gave up too much space in midfield • Nonchalant about taking chances • Too little danger from corners • Free kick organization just so-so
Game Plan and Training Ideas • Restrict counterattacks to a minimum • Mark strikers closely • Restrict long passes to a minimum • Do not concede space in corners • Force left flank of Czechs to defend • Spread ball during buildup • Play ball quickly to midfielders
Game Plan • Switch quickly in transition • Use the available space • Create 2 v 1 on the flanks • Make individual runs • Follow up shots on goal – • Keeper rebounds ball
