Consuelo Vanderbilt, daughter of U.S. railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, married Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough, owner of Blenheim Palace, in 1895, bringing around $67million, in today’s value, as dowry to the Duke.The marriage was not happy, The Marlboroughs separated in 1906 and divorced in 1921. Consuelo's second marriage, on 4 July 1921, was to Lt. Col. Jacques Balsan, a record-breaking pioneer balloon, airplane pilot and a textile manufacturing heir. Consuelo turned to charitable works. A result of this effort is the Foch Hospital, located in Suresnes, a suburb of Paris, France. The hospital also includes a school of nursing and is one of the top ranked hospitals in France. Consuelo Balsan was Honorary Treasurer of the Medical School for Women, member of the London County Council, and speaker at political rallies. The Marlborough playground was originally laid out in 1919 at the suggestion of Consuelo. Consuelo and her nephew, Winston Churchill, on the terrace at Blenheim Palace 1902
