  1. STATEWIDE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN - UPDATE • In 2001, the Arkansas General Assembly required ADEQ to develop a Statewide Solid Waste Management Plan which gives emphasis to regional planning. • After partnering with RSWMDs, UALR’s Cooperative Extension, and the Arkansas Environmental Federation, the Solid Waste Division implemented the statewide plan in November 2003.

  2. UPDATE • Along with the Department’s 10-year Strategic Plan, the Department’s website, and the current Statewide Solid Waste Management Plan, citizens, industry, and Government had access to more environmental information than ever before.

  3. UPDATE • A complete review of the current plan is required before November 2013. • A Kick-Off Meeting was held at ADEQ HQ on 8-24-2011, with leaders from Government, Industry, Education, Environment, and Business concerns participating.

  4. UPDATE • A follow-up meeting was held on 9-16-2011 in which volunteers formed the Goals Subcommittee to develop High-Level Goals for the State. • Subsequent meetings of the Goals Subcommittee were held on 10/07/11, 12/09/11, 1/05/12, and 1/19/12.

  5. UPDATE • A PowerPoint of progress will be presented at the next full Committee Meeting on 1/19/12. • Comprehensive Waste Management Assessment • What are the bright spots? • What are the State’s needs?

  6. UPDATE • Develop a cohesive strategy for the State of Arkansas. • Will include goals for waste diversion, recycling, education. • Manage solid waste while using fewer resources.

Cooperative Recycling Efforts Monroe & Prairie counties share a facility Faulkner County cities share equipment and processing center; are building curbside recycling services for all residents. Madison County offers a Recycling Processing Center, Transfer Station, Curbside Recycling collection site and a Resale Shop in one location.
