The Respiratory System (How we Breath)
The Respiratory System • consist of: • Nose + Mouth Diaphragm • Pharynx • Epiglottis • Trachea • Larynx • Bronchus • Lungs
Function Nose & Mouth - takesin air. Pharynx - a tube at the back of the mouth. Epiglottis – a flap of tissue that covers the trachea. Trachea – the windpipe.
Function Continued Larynx – vocal cords. Bronchus – the passageway between the trachea and lungs. Lungs – they help respire. Diaphragm – the muscle the inflates and deflates the lungs.
The movement of air through the respiratory system. Oxygen enters through the nose and/or mouth. Then it goes through the pharynx and then it passes the larynx thus creating sound enabling speech. From the larynx it goes through the bronchial tubes and it then goes to the lungs. The bronchial tubes are throughout the lungs. As they spread out they subdivide into bronchioles. They continue to divide into little air sacks called alveoli.
Movement Continued The lungs inflate and deflate with air by a large flat muscle called the diaphragm. When the Lungs inflate the diaphragm contracts and the rib cage rises up, which expands the chest cavity. When the lungs deflate the diaphragm relaxes and the chest cavity deflates.
