Long Range Action Plan Ralph Valente Vice Chair, Board of Directors
Long Range Action Plan • Why an Action Plan? • 10 year anniversary: What’s next? • Stay focused on mission • Vital, vibrant, and relevant programming • Create stretch goals
Long Range Action Plan • Long Range Planning Committee had first meeting in February 2008 • committee members included: • Kim Dill • Barb Genton • Marilyn Pinsky • Ralph Valente • entire Board gathered for a day-long offsite meeting in April 2008.
Long Range Action Plan • Board agreed at offsite that several issues needed to take precedent when deciding which topics to tackle: • priority and importance • task leadership • resources and expertise • Board deliberated on relative merits of 14 project areas
Long Range Action Plan • Six new committees were created: • Community Building • Public Relations/ Community Relations • Buddy Network • Expanding Physical Space • Fundraising • Membership
Long Range Action Plan • Executive Director Priorities in 2009: • expanding Sage’s paid staff • continuation of community education program targeting health care workers and facilities, police and other law enforcement, and lawmakers. • thorough program reassessment
Long Range Action Plan • Success Factors • continued presence of an engaged, activist Board • local money • member involvement
Long Range Action Plan – Committee Overviews • Community Building Committee • develop strategies to build relationships within Sage across race, orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, class, religion, education, and ability • establish/further connections with professionals who work with underserved populations
Long Range Action Plan – Committee Overviews • Public Relations Committee • outreach to the broader community beyond the constituents we serve is necessary and important and is likely to have a positive impact on broadening our programming, growing membership, and facilitating fundraising • gain support from allied groups in community • raise monies from individuals who would give if they only knew we existed • broaden awareness within our community, especially for those living in outlying areas
Long Range Action Plan – Committee Overviews • Buddy Network Committee • seniors in the LGBTQ community have less support than those in the mainstream and are less likely to consume mainstream services. How do we counter this isolation? • create structures that connect people • buddy list • buddy helpers • check-in buddies • buddy visitors
Long Range Action Plan – Committee Overviews • Expand Physical Space Committee • our present space minimally meets current needs, but is insufficient to meet the needs of a growing organization • while there is strong desire to create an LGBTQ-specific space for CNY, primary goal is to find space that serves Sage well for years to come • accessible to people with disabilities, near or on a bus line, ample parking, safe, balances privacy with central location
Long Range Action Plan – Committee Overviews • Fundraising Committee • a major emphasis of our fundraising efforts is to increase the monies we receive LOCALLY. • renewed look at the year-end fundraising appeal and the summer membership campaign • continued efforts with the Sage Donor Circle • new emphasis on targeting local corporations • work closely with the membership committee to coordinate efforts
Long Range Action Plan – Committee Overviews • Membership Committee • Sage’s official membership is small relative to the number of individuals we serve annually • this can negatively impact us in several ways: • funding agencies look critically at this discrepancy • member dues are a critical source of funding • we’ve done a bad job at explaining to our constituency why it’s important and why there’s “value” to being a member • work closely with the fundraising committee to coordinate efforts
