New Jersey Diversity • New Jersey is a diverse state with many different ecosystem • Because of this, we can expect to find different compositions of macroinvertebrates in different regions of the state • The three defined water regions of the state are: • High Gradient • Pinelands • Coastal Plains
Indices and Metrixs • In order to score each stream more accurately the Volunteer Monitoring Program has developed a separate index for each region. • Indices are used to calculate scores for each biological sample. • Each index is made up of one to five metrixs.
Score Calculation • We will go over how the scores are calculated for each region so that you understand what influences a stream’s score. • But after today, you will be able to just enter you counts into an Excel sheet that will calculate the score for you.
Costal Plain Index Overview • CPMI is comprised of the following 4 metrics: • Number of EPT taxa • Ephemeroptera, Plecotera and Trichoptera • Percent NonInsect taxa • Beck’s Biotic Index • Percent Intolerant Taxa • % Worm, Leech and Lunged Snail Individuals
Costal Plain Index Overview • The values you need to calculate the various metrics include: • The count of each organism present • The number of EPT taxa present • The percent of your sample that is non insect • Beck’s Biotic Index using tolerance values • The percent of your sample that is from intolerant taxa • The percent of your sample that are worms, leeches and snails

Coastal Plains Macroinvertebrate Index- % Worm, Leech and Lunged Snail Step 11: Enter the numbers from the specified boxes into the formulas in the Metric Table below and calculate the scores for each metric. Metric 5 100 * (46.2 - 10) / (46.2 – 1.85) 100 * (36.2 / 44.35) 100 * 0.8162 = 81.62
Coastal Plains Macroinvertebrate Index Step 12: If any of the scores you calculated in the Metrics Table are greater than 100 round that score down to 100
Coastal Plains Macroinvertebrate Index Step 13: Total the Score Column in the Metrics Table and record this number in the Total box of the Metrics Table. Divide this number by 5 to find the Average Metrics Score.
Coastal Plains Macroinvertebrate Index Step 14: Compare the Average Score in the Metric Table to the chart below to find your final stream score.
