Introduction at elementary level opens doors for students to participate at high school, university, club, or national team level. • Currently two high schools in Orillia have rowing programs: ODCVI & Twin – Schoolboy Rowing Championships in June • Western, Queens, Brock, U of T, Trent, McGill, and Guelph have rowing crews competing at OUAA & National Rowing Championships • Two local rowing clubs: Severn River Rowing Club & Orillia Rowing Club offer club program • Men’s National Team – train in Victoria BC, Women’s National Team – train in London, Ontario

  4. Olympic sport • Canada has won numerous medals both at the World Championships and Olympic rowing events • Beijing Olympics – Canadian Men’s 8+ Olympic Gold Medal Champions • Men’s pair – Silver Medalists, Men’s 4+ - Bronze Medalist and Women’s double – Bronze Medalists

  6. Excellence at rowing, goes hand in hand with excellence at school • Student athletes who participate in rowing are often high achievers • Sport demands organization, discipline, commitment & team work Lessons Learned: • hard work - on the erg or water equates to positive results; • discipline – a consistent workout routine requires good time management & discipline; • commitment – team mates rely on each other; • team work – team result based on all crew members pulling together as one.

  7. Full body workout • rowing is one of the best full body workouts: stroke initiated with legs, followed by back and then arms • core muscles – abdominal/back strength • positive cardiovascular benefits – strengthen heart and lungs • balance/timing – developed on water

  8. Students learn biomechanics concepts: • time/distance (time required to cover 500 meters in specified time), speed, power, watts • natural leverage achieved through good posture. • understanding of movement concepts • understanding musculature involved

  9. Next Steps • Commit your grade 4 to 8 students to an introductory Daily Physical Activity session. • I will: a) provide two Concept II rowing machines, and b) group instruction for your students • Cost: $100 dollars per 1 hour session payable to the Severn River Rowing Club
