  3. UPGRADING AND MIGRATING AN EXCHANGE SERVER 5.5 ORGANIZATION • Separate servers in the same organization • On same server • In different organizations

  4. DIFFERENT SERVERS IN THE SAME ORGANIZATION: PREREQUISITES • Active Directory in place • Exchange 5.5 connected to Active Directory • User accounts migrated to Active Directory

DIFFERENT SERVERS IN THE SAME ORGANIZATION: MIGRATING • Install Exchange Server 2003 on a non-Exchange member server • Join the existing Exchange Server 5.5 organization • Install Active Directory Connector (ADC) and configure connection agreement • Move mailboxes: • Active Directory Users And Computers • Exchange System Manager • Move other resources (public folders, connectors)

REMOVING AN EXCHANGE SERVER 5.5 SERVER • Migrate all resources • If Internet Mail Connector installed: • Configure SMTP Connector • Change Mail Exchanger (MX) record to point to the new server • Wait for switchover to propagate across the Internet • Remove the Internet Mail Service (IMS) • Remove the Exchange Server 5.5 server

REMOVING THE LAST EXCHANGE SERVER 5.5 SERVER • Stop Exchange Server 5.5 services • Disable the System Attendant service • Delete the Exchange Server 5.5 server from the site • Right-click connection agreement and force replication • Delete the Site Replication Service • Delete Recipient and Public Folder connection agreements • Uninstall the ADC

  8. INTERIM UPGRADING TO EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER • Apply the latest Windows NT 4 Server service pack (if appropriate) • Upgrade Windows NT 4 Server to Windows 2000 Server (if appropriate) • Apply Windows 2000 SP3 or SP4 • Apply Exchange 5.5 Server SP3 or later

INTERIM UPGRADING TO EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER (CONT.) • Ensure Windows 2000 Server Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) services are installed • Upgrade Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server SP3 or later • Upgrade Exchange 2000 Server to Exchange Server 2003 • Upgrade Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003 (if required)

  10. INSTALLING EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER • Very similar to installing Exchange Server 2003 • Choose to upgrade an existing organization • Cannot immediately add components; rerun the Installation Wizard to add additional components

MIGRATING TO A SEPARATE EXCHANGE SERVER 2003 ORGANIZATION • Configure a two-way trust between the source and target domains • The account used needs Administrative permissions in: • The source domain • The target domain and organizational unit (OU) • Each local computer for which security is migrated to the new domain

MIGRATING USER ACCOUNTS • Configure a recipient connection agreement • Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003: user account associated with a single mailbox • Exchange Server 5.5: can have a single Windows user account associated with multiple mailboxes • Two approaches to this problem: • ADC • Active Directory Migration Tool

  13. ACTIVE DIRECTORY MIGRATION TOOL • Simplest way to migrate user accounts from one domain to another • Included in the \I386\Admt folder on the Windows Server 2003 installation CD • Can perform both intraforest and interforest migrations

USING THE ACTIVE DIRECTORY MIGRATION TOOL • Access the User Account Migration Wizard • Specify source and target domains • List all user accounts in the Users container • Add the user accounts to migrate • Specify the target OU • Migrate passwords • Specify the account transition options • Configure user options

TASKS PERFORMED BY THE EXCHANGE SERVER MIGRATION WIZARD • Migrate all mailbox information to the new Exchange Server mailboxes • Create new user accounts in Active Directory • Migrate X.400, SMTP, cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail, and other e-mail addresses • Convert Active Directory contacts to mail-enabled user accounts in Active Directory • Update Exchange Server 2003 group membership

LIMITATIONS OF THE MIGRATION WIZARD • Does not clean up or remove mailboxes in the source organization • Does not preserve access control lists (ACLs) • Cannot migrate mailboxes within the same organization • Does not migrate personal mail archives or personal address books • Does not migrate distribution lists • Does not migrate Inbox rules • Does not migrate public folders

UPGRADING FROM EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER • More straightforward than upgrading from Exchange Server 5.5 • Microsoft supports an in-place upgrade • Issues to consider prior to the upgrade: • Exchange Server 2003 does not provide support for some features that existed in Exchange 2000 Server • Support for Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail connectors has been removed

  23. OPERATING SYSTEM AND EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER REQUIREMENTS • Exchange 2000 Server SP3 or later • Windows 2000 Server SP3 or later • Same language version • Upgrade front-end servers first • Upgrade ADCs to the Exchange Server 2003 version

ADDITIONAL PREINSTALLATION TASKS • Delete the contents of the \Exchsrvr\Mailroot\Vsi 1\BadMail folder • Audit third-party Exchange Server add-on programs in use • Make a full backup of Exchange and all its databases • Do a test restore to another server to ensure that the backup is good • Ensure that no Exchange Server–related programs are running • Manually stop the services for third-party add-ons

MIGRATING TO A NEW ORGANIZATION • Use the Active Directory Migration Tool to move accounts • Use the Exchange Server Migration Wizard to move mailboxes • Use the Inter-Organization Replication Tool to move public folders • Need administrative permissions in the source and target domains • A two-way trust must exist between domains
