Why Did Japan Attack? • Japan invaded China. • U.S. placed an embargoon Japan, preventing the sale of goods to them. • Japan couldn’t produce all of its own resources. • Needed to find other ways to get resources.
Wanted to invade more countries to get resources (like the Philippines). • Knew that if it attacked these, the U.S. would get involved. • Decided to neutralize the U.S. by bombing Pearl Harbor. • On December 7, 1941
Why Didn’t the U.S. Prevent It? • Arrogance—U.S. didn’t believe a “non-white” country could successfully attack them. • Lack of Communication—people didn’t share info, warnings of war were ignored, and communication from Japan was not interpreted correctly. • Didn’t think Japan would attack before declaringwar—even though historically this was how Japan operated. • Worried about sabotage—considered Japanese-Americans more of a threat than Japan.
