Jimmy Carter 1977-1981 • Major Events: • Camp David • Conflict between Israel and Egypt • Meeting with Anwar el-Sadat (Egyptian President) and Menachem Begin (Israel Prime Minister) at Presidential resort of Camp David. • First time a Muslim and Jewish leader will meet to talk peace • Israel will pull troops out of Egyptian Sinai Peninsula and Egypt will recognize Israel as country! • Three Mile Island: • Nuclear Power Plant in Harrisburg Pennsylvania • Close to meltdown in 1979

Jimmy Carter Continued • Humanitarian • Advancements in Civil Rights • Provided aid to allied countries to improve Civil Rights • Pardoned the Vietnam draft dodgers. • Panama Canal • Panama would receive the Canal as part of their country on December 31, 1999 • Collapse of Détente • Humanitarian approach broke relations with U.S.S.R. • Salt II – signed which limited the amount of strategic weapons • Treaty did not last. • Weak economy • No real plan – inflation continued
President Regan (1981 – 1989) • Domestic: • Reganomics – • side supply economics: pay fewer taxes, save money, more loans. • Give tax breaks on businesses and wealthy • “Trickle Down Theory” – benefits of business will “trickle down” to consumers and working class. • National debt – increase defense spending, but cut taxes • Reduce the size of the government • War on Drugs • DARE created • Aids Epidemic • Campaigns for safe sex now presented in schools.
Ragan Continued • Foreign Policy: • Iran Hostage Crisis • Hostages are released • Nicaragua and Latin America • Nicaragua – Regan charges them with soviet ties • Supports the Contras – a guerrilla style group involved with the Civil War • Grenada – Regan sends troops to overthrow the Communist government friendly with Cuba • Panama – Sends troops to arrest Drug Lord Manuel Noreiga
