EXTENSION QUESTIONS • What is glycogen & how is it made & where is it stored? • Where is ATP stored & how ling will this store last? • What chemical will remake ATP quickly & how much longer will we be able to work? • Why does the lactic acid system get used to make energy instead of the aerobic system? • How long will the PC & lactic acid system allow us to work hard for? • What is an oxygen deficit? ANSWERS
EXAM QUESTIONS • What do the terms aerobic & anaerobic mean? (2 marks) • Why does the body produce lactic acid & how does the body react to a build up of it? (4 marks) • What is an oxygen debt & when is it likely to occur? (3 marks) • Energy for physical activity is produced aerobically & anaerobically. Choose 1 activity & explain how it uses energy. (5 marks) • What is meant by the term ‘threshold of training’? (1 mark) • Compare the energy produced for short & long distance events. (4 marks) • What is glycogen & give 2 places in the body where it is stored? (2 marks) • Carbon dioxide is a waste product of energy release. Name 2 others & how does the body get rid of waste products during physical activity? (4 marks) • What is aerobic fitness & how is it affected by high altitude? (5 marks) • How is food broken down into energy & how does the rate of this process affect physical performance? (4 marks) ANSWERS
EXTENSION ANSWERS • Glycogen is the substance used to make ATP. It is made from carbohydrate that we eat in our food. It is stored in the liver & muscles. • ATP is stored in the muscles & will only for about 5-8 seconds of hard work. • Creatine phosphate will allow us to work for another 20 seconds. • The Aerobic system is slow & it takes time for oxygen to reach the muscles. During this time the lactic acid system acts as a stop gap system to allow us to work during this time. • About 1 minutes worth of hard work. • An oxygen deficit is when muscles need more oxygen than they are receiving.
EXAM ANSWERS • Work / exercise with oxygen & without oxygen. • It is produced in the absence of oxygen to break down glycogen for energy. Muscles get tired & muscle contraction becomes painful. • The amount of oxygen that needs to be replaced after the body has worked without exercise on top of that normally taken in. This debt will occur normally within the first 3 minutes of exercise & at the point of maximal heart rate. • Aerobics/ sprinting (other relevant similar activities) - oxygen is used to break down glycogen for energy. The aerobic system is a slow one which produces lots of energy & makes carbon dioxide & water as waste products& will produce energy for long periods of time. In sprinting lactic acid is used to break down glycogen & will work for a short time only, it makes energy quickly, but will only last up to 3 minutes. • Heart rate to work at or above to gain certain training effects. • Short- Phosphocreatine or lactic acid system used as energy is made in the absence of oxygen. Pc stores last up to 30 seconds & is remade quickly after this time the lactic acid system takes over. Long - the aerobic system is used but is slow, it makes lots of energy & will do for long periods as long as there is glycogen available. • The substance used to make ATP that comes form carbohydrates & is stored in the liver & muscles. • Lactic acid, water , heat removed by circulation, sweating, vasodiloation, evaporation & radiation. • How well we use oxygen to work. The more efficient we are at it the fitter we are. At high altitude there is less oxygen available as the air is thinner the higher you get. If you train high up the body will adapt to this by using less oxygen to produce the same output. When you return to ground level there will be more oxygen available so performance will be better as efficiency will be greater. • Aerobically with oxygen & anaerobically without oxygen. The longer you can resist fatigue anaerobically & the quicker you can work aerobically the better the performance.
