The whole process • Freshman/Sophomore year • Work hard in your classes. • Volunteer/Shadow/Attend speakers • Attend workshops on personal statement/how to…/interviewing • Junior Year • Finish course work • Continue to volunteer and shadow • Exam Preparation • Take entrance exams • Apply to your schools…early! • Senior Year • Take hard classes • Wait for and then immediately fill out secondary application • Interview • Wait.

4. Advising • We work with your academic advisor to make sure that you have all of the requirements met for your professional school program • Easy for medical school • More requirements for dental, vet, optometry, and PT • Have advising “cheat sheets” for all students to use

6. What you can do about coursework • Get A’s and B’s the first time through • Really learn the material…the first time • No binge studying • Change the way you learn!!!!! • Read! Read! Read!

7. Personalized Assessment • During your sophomore year, you must meet individually with me! • We look at transcript • We talk about professional development • We make an assessment and prediction of your success. • This meeting is mandatory for all sophomores…so expect it

8. Professional Mentoring Program • In your sophomore year, you are paired with a practicing health-professional • It is a two-year commitment • Meet a minimum of 4 times in 2 years. • Discuss current issues, make connections with other specialists, shadow, etc. • Currently only set-up for pre-med, but will be expanding soon to dentistry and beyond.

10. Committee Letters • You’ll ask 5 or 6 faculty to write a short recommendation for you. Our office collects these. Hand these out at the end of the semester!!! • You’ll select a writer of your committee letter • This person should be a professor you’ve had for more than one class or a research or thesis advisor. • You can select this person later.

11. Committee Letters • At the end of your junior year, the letter will be written. • This will include comments from all faculty recommendations and will include a list of activities and such as given to us by the Pre-Health Society. • Keep your Pre-Health file up-to-date! Judy Malarney is your best friend! • This committee letter is sent to the school in lieu of individual letters.

13. Exam Preparation • Free Materials for Check-out • MCAT, DAT, GRE, OAT, VCAT • Practice exams, review books, study guides • Courses • MCAT and GRE prep courses in the spring semester…Princeton Review • Worry about this in the fall of your junior year and if you take a prep class, do so in the spring of your junior year.

Workshops • Personal Statements • Learn how to write about why you want to be a… • Need to show that you are a virtuous person • Significant experience that helped you see what an MD/PT/DDS does in the real world. • Not necessarily a “save the world, world peace” statement • Interview skills • Learn how to talk to the folks in the admissions office. • Be yourself and talk with them…don’t try to be what you think they want. • Others • Medical ethics, faith and vocation, financial aid, how to apply, etc. • Many are combined with law or graduate school prep…it doesn’t matter • You need to attend these workshops and you need to begin thinking about these things now!!!

17. When do I apply • Application preparation starts NOW! • Volunteer, shadow, class work, etc. • Formal application process begins at the end of your junior year • We’ll have a “How-to” seminar • Most professional schools use an on-line service.

Some Questions/Comments • I want to talk with post grads who’ve gone thru the process • Go to the pre-health speaker series • Job shadow • Mentor Program in your sophomore year • I need to know more about volunteer events and speakers • Go to the pre-health society meetings! • I want a database of med school info • We’re working on a better website for our office and will have links to many schools. • Go to www.aamc.org • Come see me!

19. Some Questions/Comments • I want to know the admission requirements for my school. • Go online to your school’s web site and look them up. • I want IU admissions to visit Butler • They usually do. Participate in the Pre-Health Society and attend their meetings. • I want MCAT prep. • Worry about that in your junior year • I want an overview of the application process • Don’t worry about this right now. We’ll walk you through the process when you’re a junior. Just focus on classes and building your portfolio

Reality Check! • Are you qualified for a health profession? • Need strong science/math skills • Need drive and motivation and focus • Need to know how to study and delegate time • What else is out there? • Public health administration • Nursing • Non-health care related fields • What can I do besides a health profession? • Anything you’re passionate about and qualified for • I’ve always wanted to be a doctor! • Many have said this and aren’t
