Animal Farm-Use of Power • Farmer Jones is in charge of animals • Old Major used his position (oldest- most respected animal) to convince the other animal to rebel • The Pigs take charge (after rebellion) • Commandments are established • Organized work schedule • Have a song that they all sing in unison called Beast of England
Animal Farm- Abuse of Power • At the beginning, the pigs assume control without an election • Napoleon lies to the other pigs about Snowball being evil (root of all problems) • Napoleon takes the young puppies up to a loft to teach them to do his “dirty work” • Changed commandments to suite their needs on the farm and they lied saying that they didn’t change them • Napoleon took Snowball’s idea to make the windmill and he took credit for it • Napoleon sent Boxer away to be killed after he worked excessively for the farm
1984- Use of Power • Keep people in line by giving them a strict schedule to follow, such as: Community Center, 2 minutes of hate, Anti-sex league, etc. • No discrimination within the party, besides the inner party • Have special products that are government regulated. Ex: Victory Coffee, Victory Cigarettes, etc. • Winston gave himself power by sneaking around the government and trying to rebel • O’Brien used his power to fool Winston into thinking he was a part of the brotherhood
1984- Abuse of Power • Big Brother is always watching/ spying • No privacy • Can’t think negative thoughts or you will be vaporized for committing “thoughtcrime” • Vaporize anyone that doesn’t agree with the party • Alter history in order to make the party seem correct at all times • Proles are kept uneducated so they wont rebel
Cincinnatus- Use of Power • He was a Roman leader in 458 B.C. • He was offered complete power after he helped lead his country to victory and he turned it down and went back to work on his farm. • He demonstrates good use of power because he isn't greedy and he has the best interests in mind for his country.
Ayatollah Khamenei- Abuse of Power • “Supreme Leader” of Iran • He has the power to turn down any government policy. • The Iranian Majlis had successfully impeached President Ahmadinejad until the Ayatollah said no, and that was the end of it.
