Spain and the Caribbean • Lost all colonies EXCEPT for Cuba and Puerto Rico • Since 1868 Cuba had been revolting • Jose Marti • Leader of the Cuban Revolution Party 1892 • Exiled to NYC • Writes poetry and newspaper articles to rally the masses • 1895 – Revolt – Marti dies • Spanish army puts Cubans in camps to keep civilians from aiding rebels, 1/3 die!!

  9. CUBA • Teller Amendment  once Cuba is free, America will “leave the government and control to its people” • July 1st – Battle of San Juan Hill • US troops defeat Spanish • July 3rd – entire Spanish fleet sank off the Cuban coast • Two weeks later – Spain is defeated in Puerto Rico.

  11. PHILIPPINES • May 1st 1898: Commodore George Dewey Attacks Manila • 400 Spanish die/injured • No American lives lost • August 14th: Dewey and Filipino rebels surround Sp. troops • Spain surrenders The War Lasts only 4 months in total!
