Explain how his knowledge contributed to the study of geography. • Explain how Muslim scholars helped preserve European and Indian knowledge. • Identify scientific achievements made in the Muslim world. • Describe what function minarets serve in a mosque. • Explain how Muslim artists create art without showing humans or animals.

  3. Terms and People Ibn Battutahexplored distant areas. Here’s a few bucks for your effort. • Sufis are Muslims that believe they should have a personal relationship with God. • Omar Khayyanwas a great Muslim poet. • Patrons were wealthy Muslims who supported the arts.

  5. Ibn Battutah traveled to Timbuktu, to Central Asia, and to China.

  6. Because the Muslims held a central position in the Old World, it acted as a highway for knowledge between different cultures. The Hindu number system traveled through Muslim lands to Europe. Paper and other Chinese inventions traveled through Muslim lands to Europe. Moslems translated Greek learning into Arabic and Turkish Later, Europeans translated it into Latin.
