Workshop objectives • Provide information • Assess levels of interest • Seek feedback on some issues • Identify other issues to be explored • Commence preparations for a discussion group and possibly a trial
History of ENUM in Australia • The ACA is monitoring ENUM developments • Increasingly, ENUM is being looked at by different organisations within Australia • The ACA’s involvement includes giving presentations, holding meetings, attending international meetings and releasing discussion papers seeking feedback on issues associated with ENUM
ENUM public discussion paper • Discussion paper released September 2002 • Sought feedback on 13 different questions • 21 responses were received • These responses, plus a consolidated summary, are available from the ACA website
ENUM public discussion paper (cont) • All submissions agreed that ENUM has important implications for privacy • However, there were different views regarding authentication, security and access to the database • There was no consensus what ENUM is for • Is ENUM a ‘routing protocol’, ‘directory service’ or both?
ENUM public discussion paper (cont) • General agreement that registry and registrar functions should be separate • Many CSPs suggested that they are well placed to operate the registry • Some suggested that the ACA should operate the registry
ENUM public discussion paper (cont) • All agreed that ENUM should be set up on an opt-in basis when used as a directory service (however, for routing, opt-in may not be appropriate) • There was disagreement about whether ENUM required new or unique numbers • The feedback received was used to generate additional questions (more on that later)

Issues that need to resolved • Is the prime use of ENUM expected to be as a routing service or a directory service? • What is your organisation’s interest in ENUM? • If ENUM is a routing service, what technical solutions could be used to route the calls?
Issues that need to resolved (cont) • Can ENUM be used to assist routing of calls from IP networks to the PSTN and vice versa? Are there limitations to the way in which ENUM can assist routing of calls? • Can the role of ENUM as a directory service and ENUM as a routing service be separated?
Issues that need to resolved (cont) • Are there any alternatives to ENUM? • Should the ACA take a ‘wait and see’ approach to ENUM and observe international events until it is satisfied that: • there is significant industry demand for ENUM, and/or • the role of ENUM is better defined?
Issues that need to resolved (cont) • If ENUM is only a part solution to the convergence of the PSTN with IP networks, why is it worth pursuing? • Does ENUM need a separate number range, either for testing purposes or for any other purpose? • ETSI TS 102 172: Minimum Requirements for Interoperability of European ENUM Trials
Issues that need to resolved (cont) • How can the personal data contained in the ENUM database, Domain Name System, and the WHOIS database be protected from use for unwanted purposes such as telemarketing or SPAM?
