Sample Proposal Date: November 7, 2005 To: Mrs. Spencer From: Jessica Man Subject: My American Dream and Arthur Ashe Project Description: Although Arthur Ashe was the first African-American chosen to play on the American tennis team in 1963, tennis did not define his character. Through his fame as a tennis star, Arthur Ashe wanted to establish equality in sports and after his diagnosis of HIV, wanted to establish equality in health care with his organization, The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health. With this, I plan to study Ashe’s view of the American Dream and his search for racial equality in my multi-genre piece. I will further build upon my own perspective of the American Dream and its development throughout history. I will explore Ashe’s memoir and organizations and writings about him to complete my multi-genre paper. Similar to mine, Arthur Ashe’s American Dream began with an ambition to be someone great, his being to become a champion tennis player; however unlike me, Ashe’s dream became something more-an idea of using his fame to bring about change and equality. Resources Needed (MLA Format-this is not): 1. Arthur Ashe, Caroline EvensonLazo 2. Arthur Ashe, Weissberg 3. Days of Grace: a memoir, Arthur Ashe 4. IntoThe Wild, Jon Krakauer 5. Arthur Ashe website 6. Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health
