Steamboat • Robert Fulton designed a steam engine for a steamboat that could move against the current of a river or against the wind. • The steamboat created more opportunities for trade and transportation on rivers.
Coal for Steam Engines Development of Steam Engine • Steam engines needed large amounts of fuel • Wood scarce • Coal mining industry • Changing landscapes • Dangers of mining • First successful steam engine in 1712 • Innovations by James Watt • Steam power versus water power • Steam locomotives • Steamships • Robert Fulton Steam Powers the Revolution
Make GeneralizationsWhat impact did the steam engine have on the growth of industry? • Answer(s): major impact; used in textile mills, factories could be located away from rivers, powered locomotives and ships, led to development of coal as a resource, more factories built near northern coal mines
The Telegraph • The telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse. • This machine sent long and short pulses of electricity along a wire. • Signaling system that uses combinations of long and short sounds, flashes of light or electrical pulses • With the telegraph, it took only seconds to communicate with another city. • The invention of the steamboat and telegraph brought the people of the nation closer to each other.

John Deere John Deere desired to meet the farmer’s needs Became convinced that a highly polished properly shaped moldboard could turn itself 1837 used steel from broken saw blade and field tested this new plow Deere’s Self-Polishing Plow was the answer to many farmer’s needs Farmers were able to till more fertile soil Demand was high for Deere’s Plow Deere knew this innovation would be adopted and diffused quickly
Eli Whitney • In 1793, He invented the cotton gin. This machine removed the seeds from the cotton. • Cotton was then sold more cheaply • The USA did better in selling cloth to other countries.
The Importance of the Cotton Gin • Because cotton could be cleaned in a shorter period of time, the South prospered in this industry. • The gin took the seeds out of the cotton, which was much faster than doing it by hand. • The cotton gin also greatly expanded the need for slaves. By using the cotton gin, one man could clean ten times as much cotton as he could have on his own.
New Technologies help nation grow • With new farm equipment, Midwestern farmers grew food to feed Northeastern factory workers. • Midwestern farmers became a market for Northeastern manufactured goods. • The growth of the textile factories increased the demand for Southern cotton. • This led to the expansion of slavery.
Other inventors… • James Watt- made improvements to steam engine that saved a significant amount of energy. Invented concept of horsepower. SI unit of power named after him, the WATT • Charles Goodyear- volcanized rubber. Discovered by accident • Alexander Graham Bell-telephone
