  1. High Level Panel (4) - Experiences Toward Sustainability «Sustainable Management of Water Pipelines in terms of Leak Detection, Loss Control and Rehabilitation» Yasin Torun Chairman, TSITT ESC Member, ISTT Governor, World Water Council 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  2. Outline • Introduction • LeakDetection • Loss Control • Rehabilitation • Recommendations Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  3. Introduction Water transmissionanddistribution systems are evaluatedas a crucialinfrastructure system whichis used in delivering potable water to people. Water distribution systems are aging and deteriorating over time. (source: virtualmuseum.ca) Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  4. Introduction Each year, hundredsof kilometers of pipes are rehabilitated aroundthe world. The deterioration of water distribution systems becomes apparentthrough the impaired water quality, loweredhydraulic capacity, high leakage rate and repetitivebreaks. (source: 3M) Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  5. LeakDetection Thereareseveralavailablemethods (acoustic, electromagnetic, vibration, etc.) tomonitoranddetecttheleaks in waterpipelines. However, weshall be awarethatleaksare not reasons; theyareresults. Pressuremanagement is a mustforleakdetection. (source: Bigstock) Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  6. LeakDetection Water pressure management is the use of pressure regulating valves and system monitoring points to achieve more consistent and lower water pressure levels across the water supply network. (source: Emerson) Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  7. Loss Control Basic stepsarelisted as below: • Problem determination, • Measurementwithflowmeter, • SCADA systemapplication, • Creation of DMAs • Pressuremanagement • Active leakdetection • Water reservoirisolation • Renewal of oldwatermeters • Rehabilitation of thepipeline Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  8. Loss Control Creating DMA andinstallingnecessaryequipments (pressure regulating valve, flowmeter, etc.) is a musttocontrolthewaterloss. Electronic andhydrauliccontrolunitsreceivenecessary data andcreateopenorclosecommandsfor PRV based on flow-sensitivedynamiccontrolmethod. (source: TBM Endustri) Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  9. Rehabilitation In a pipeline system, aging of the pipeline due to a variety of internal and external factors reduces its functionality as a water supply system and increases the risk of pipe failure. Failure of aging pipelines leads to greater social and economic damage. (source: 3M) Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  10. Rehabilitation Thus, through proper rehabilitation and replacement, the pipeline systems must be managed to ensure safe water quality and structural performance. (source: Uhrig) Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  11. Recommendations The belowitemswould be usefulforsustainablemanagementof waterpipelinesin terms of leakdetection, losscontrolandrehabilitation: • Pipelinesarelivingorganisms • Leakdetectionstudiesshall be continuous • Pressuremanagement is a musttocontrolwaterloss • Rehabilitation is important not onlyforpreventingtheleaks but alsoforincreasingthestructuralperformance • Utilities shallreceiveengineeringconsultancyservicesfortheirleakdetection, losscontrolandrehabilitationprojects. Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan

  12. THANK YOU & WELCOME TO Yasin Torun, 5th Arab Water Week, 3-5 March 2019 - Jordan
